5 speakers with a 7.1 receiver.....

I need to buy a new audio receiver (likely a 7.1), but would like to use my current speakers until I can save enough money to buy more. I know I will need a powered sub, but can I just use the 5 satellite speakers at least temporarily?

If so - which 2 channels do I not use?
