Just a simple question popped into my mind recently ..
- How do Mozilla (or any other corp for that matter) makes profit out of their open-source browser (Firefox) . we just get the browser & enjoy .. use plug-ins .. etc & pay nothing. how the company can make money out of their free internet browser ?

I think they are funded by somebody like Sun, or Netscape.

wow thats conspiracy.

i thought every time you install FireFox you get that search field, not exactly a tool bar just a search area with options to select where you want to search.

I'm pretty sure (not positive) that they get a cut for every Google search conducted with Firefox, etc.

So that's what i do wrong. I code by night and stand on the corner by day. So those bus drivers were trying to pick me up, just not in the way I hoped.

I think that goes for the Firefox Google start page as well. You can see when you make a search that there is a client variable passed as "Firefox" in the URL.

This is exactly where it comes from. Last I checked, somewhere around 80% of their income is from google searches using that search box in the upper right corner. They get paid each time you do a search from that.

Yep i'll try making most of my searches through that google bar from now on. Mozilla deserves the help for their awesome frequently updated browser!

Google pays them a ton of money to be the default start page / search engine. That simple.

I read an article with the firefox ceo being interviewed and she said that not only google but yahoo and a few other companies pay them tremendous amounts of money to add their search engine into the top right corner of the browser.

If you click the google G, you'll see who all has paid them. It's just that google pays them the most to be the default provider.

Some companies are actually including firefox as the default browser app now rather than IE so they're paying mozilla for this too.

They're also attempting to standardize firefox as THE browser in japan and china too I think. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir but it's only a matter of time before they take o'er the world.
