View Full Version : Optical Audio Lag?

Alright, I've noticed that I'm getting some sort of audio lag and I suspect it is related to my optical audio connection.

Currently I've got my PS3 connected to a set of Logitech Z5500 Digital speakers using an optical cable. There is literally a 1000-1500 ms delay (1 - 1.5 seconds) with the audio, and I'm curious as to whether or not there is any way to correct the issue.

Could it be a result of setting my optical output as DTS 5.1 (perhaps the decoding by the speakers is causing the delay), or is there any setting available that might "speed up" the audio processing. The lag is annoying in Blu-Ray movies, and games as well.

Anyone notice a similar problem and have a solution, or am I imagining things?

I'm using the exact same setup, and I haven't noticed any issues. I checked all of the boxes for audio, and it usually picks Dolby Digital on the Z5500s for movies. (You'll know which one it is because you can't change the effect when using it)

With a 1 second or more delay I would assume that when people are speaking their lips are ahead of what they are saying, so it would be pretty easy to determine that. Is it just one movie, or all movies you have? BR and DVD, or just one or the other?

Also, there is a setting for surround delay on the Z5500's, perhaps that is turned all the way up.

Another setting I just looked at is the BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital). It's under Settings > BD / DVD settings. I have that set to Bitstream and not Linear PCM.

I just tested playing MI-2 and it looks to be working fine. I haven't played anything since the latest firmware update so I wanted to make sure it was still working after it.

I also noticed that you said you were using DTS, so I tested that as well using Aeon Flux. I swear there are some parts where I'm probably tricking myself into thinking there is a sync problem (It might actually be one with the movie too where it wasn't 100% synced), but when I'm watching a part where someone is talking it's right on the money. Another interesting thing that I noticed is if you fast forward at 1.5x it switches the mode from DTS to probably 2 channel, then it will switch back once you hit play again. So using DTS I'm not seeing anything as noticeable as what you are referring to.

I too am using the exact same setup. PS3 with Z5500s and I haven't noticed lag with my PS3, 360 or anything else that outputs a 720p signal. HOWEVER my old DVD player would only output 576p, I had lag with that as I assume it took time for the TV to upscale and display the image. A movie would start with no lag and eventually end up with 1 second or more. I fixed it by running the digital audio through the TV so it could sync before sending the audio to the Z5500s.

Hmmm...Perhaps I'm just imagining it. It shouldn't be an issue with the LCD lag, because the video totally appears to be AHEAD of the audio, if it was a result of HD lag it should be the opposite.

Is it instanteously or is it just partway through a movie? It could be something like what Crainger said where they might get out of sync over time. I didn't play anything longer than 10 mins or so when I tested, but I can't say as I've noticed any issues since I've had the PS3 either.

I am using the upscaler for DVD's though, so maybe it's slowing down the video enough to not get out of sync. :) (Also using the 1080p24 option for BR movies.)
