installed driver, can't change resolution

had RH8 installed before and everything worked, did a fresh install of RH9 updated everything installed newest nvidia driver edited x86config file to "nvidia" and deleted "dri". restarted got the splash screen but will not display in anything but 800x600. can't turn 3D acceleration on. In the display settings it says "Unknown monitor with NVIDIA GeForce 4 (generic)" . My screen's resoulution is 1600x1200.

Dell latitude c840
P4 1.8 512 MB ram

Ah yes, the perennial "the 3D acceleration checkbox is grayed out!" issue. ;)

The reason it's grayed out is because the wonderful little GUI program you have doesn't understand these drivers at all. It's convinced that no nVidia cards have 3D acceleration capabilities (and as far as it's concerned, they don't -- RedHat cannot distribute the drivers with its OS due to the terms of the GPL), so it grays the selection out. Your 3D should still be working fine.

As for the resolution problem, it's very likely this:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 31.50-37.90 kHz
(II) NVIDIA(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 50.00-70.00 Hz Those ranges are awfully low, in both cases. Check your monitor's specifications for the range of horizontal and vertical sync frequency, then put those ranges into your XF86Config file (replace whatever's there now). If you take a look in the log, you can see all the higher resolutions being rejected because "hsync out of range". Increasing the HorizSync should either change these messages to "vsync out of range", or get rid of them entirely.

But be sure you don't increase the range for HorizSync (or VertRefresh) beyond your monitor's capabilities -- you can easily break the monitor if you do.

Not a big deal, it's just that searching (assuming you could come up with the right terms to search for) would have found the solution for you much more quickly than asking.

As for the refresh rate issues -- is it working at a higher resolution now?
