Onkyo 5.1

So my parents finally got around to getting a new TV. They picked up a Sharp Aquos 46" and set it up with DirecTV's HD package with DVR. It's pretty sweet tbh. Now my dads looking to get a surround sound package and he's most interested in the Onkyo 5.1 setup.

Is this a good system? I know the sub should probably upgraded, but are those speakers even big enough to sound good? The combo is currently $270 or $260 after tax with a %10 off coupon I keep getting in the email. Opinions anyone? Thanks

Personally, I would build one myself. But if you are going to get an Onkyo, I would save up another $100 and get the SR800.

It's hard to build an entire 5.1 system including the AVR for $269.- so there isn't really an alternative to such systems as the onkyo one. Onkyo is a quality brand, that's for sure, they do make good receivers, I use one myself and I'm glad with it. I haven't heard one of their 5.1 systems yet, but I'm sure they are worth their money, you should listen to the system before you buy it never the less.

You could also think about buying an AVR (like an Onkyo SR505) and go stereo first. A good stereo set will likely sound better than a cheap 5.1 system anyway and with such an AVR you can upgrade anytime you want to, though this will be more expensive.

The only thing that catches my eye at a cursory glance is there are no HDMI ins or outs.....but it is a great price.

Onkyo receivers are good, but their speakers aren't. In fact, stay away from instant "home theater in a box" setups entirely.

I grabbed a Pioneer VSX-1016TX receiver and a pair of Polk RTi4 and a SVS PCi Series sono tube sub for $1.3K Seriously not a bad setup for 2.1 ;) For $300 ish tho you don't really have any other options. Grab a second hand receiver on ebay and a pair of monitors to start out :o
