What do you guys recommend for a good defragging utility for use in Vista x64?

I know Vista defrags when its idle... but I think its completely retarded that I can't see the fragmentation of the drive, or even see WHICH drive is being defragmented.

Is there a program that looks similar to the XP defragmenter that will work in Vista x64?

Also, are there any possible risks or side effects to using a 3rd party defragmenter?

I recommend this one. Its also very fast as you can set the CPU priority when defragging.

And here is one that will defrag your registry. Try them both as they are free and work awesome. Both are highly rated as well among users of Vista.

Well, now I have to thank you, too! You brought it up a while back and I'm fairly impressed. I wished the freeware version had automation options, but its still a damn good package.

I just gave AusLogic's defragger a try and it seems to work great. Very easy to use and it has plenty of info about the fragmentation of the drive.

It seems really fast too. :D

Vista does have the defrag, but big difference from XP though. It's better to use 3rd party program.

I've been using PerfectDisk (http://www.raxco.com/products/for_the_consumer.cfm) for the last few years and it has always worked well. It's not free however:(

Auslogics is really fast. I use it to defrag computers that clients bring around. One computer was about 8 years old, never been defragged or cleaned up. Took 35 mins on 3 40Gb drives.

Btw, i found Auslogics first, so all credit crainger claims, i take in his stead.

defrag c: -v -w , works fine... :D, or Power Defragmenter (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Power-Defragmenter.shtml) is a GUI for Contig (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/contig.mspx)
