View Full Version : Messed up colors on NVidia + Red Hat 9 + Apple Cinema Screen DFP
I just installed Red Hat 9 and the latest NVidia
driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349).
Everything used to work perfectly with RH8 and
NVidia (4191), but now I get garbled colors
probably due to bad color depth...
Is there something obvious that I am missing?
A snapshot of what the monitor looks like can
be found at

Thanks a lot!!

Are your cables tight? Does falling back to 1.0-4191 restore sanity? What color depth does your X log indicate you're using?
Nice google search... ;)

That's precisely what my messed up colors look like, reported in an earlier thread (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9463). Another Linux user is seeing the same thing (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5368&highlight=wrong+colors). The bug is cross platform: a Windows user has also reported seeing this problem (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10001).
We're not just all seeing wrong colors; we're all seeing the same wrong colors. The most obvious change is that light greys become yellow, and dark greys become blue. All colors are changed in various ways, though. The first thread linked to above has a more detailed description.
So now we've got several reports of this on two platforms with a couple of different driver versions and assorted digital displays. Hopefully all of that will help the good folks at NVIDIA reproduce and fix the problem soon....

I've got it reproduced here. Thanks for the info!

Andy,
You said you were able to reproduce the bug.
Do you have any suggestion about how to fix
the problem or an ETA for a solution?
I tried to downgrade to the previous driver but it
doesn't work
rpm -Uvh NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.rh80up.i686.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
kernel = 2.4.18-14 is needed by NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.rh80up
I have a 2.4.20 kernel. Is it possible to post
a 4191 driver for the latest RH 9.0 kernel?
That would be great!
Thanks

I don't have an ETA for a fix, unfortunately.
Because of changes that RH9 pulled into their kernel and glibc, no driver before 1.0-4349 will work.

Andy,
I don't know if this is of any help, but I re-installed
RH 8.0 with 4191 (a previously working config)
and the monitor still looks like crap... sorry, like
weird.
Is it possible that the new driver performs some
permanent changes to the card (NVRAM or something)?
Are these changes reversible?
Thanks a lot!
G
I tried the upgrade but it didn't change much...
Thanks!

Unfortunately, 1.0-4363 didn't address this problem. It's still being worked on.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience...
