This could be a supurb low price, high performance card. I've yet to see a review of it though?

It'll get a nice 3dMark sure (nigh on the same as the 512mb version), but 256mb of memory is just too cramped these days.

I wonder if x2 of these 256mb versions in SLI = 199ex

vs

x1 512mb version = 150ex ish

would be a good idea?

50 more for same memory as a single 512 8800 but x2 cores

hmmmmmm

It doesn't work this way. With SLI you don't add up the memory of the two cards. Instead, each card has a copy of the same data, so in the end you have the same memory as you would with only one card...

I use a 7900gs with 256mb of vram and get hitching quite often in new games. ;)

My last computer had 2GB of ram, and my new computer has 2GB's of ram. My new computer is so much smoother in every game though because the ram is faster and more streamlined thanks to the processor.

The same principle applies to video cards. Although, you will hit a ceiling with the 256mb version quickly.

the memory just kills that card, but if your monitor only goes up to 1280x1024 or so, it's a steal (at least for most games..).

I'm also thinking a no brainer upgrade for people considering the 8600's.

20-30 more.

the 8800GT 256mb might be good if you run a low resolutio like 1024x768 ,but anything higher and you are going to miss that extra 256mb.look like you could get a good deal on a 8800GTS 640mb at ebay .Plus if you can find a ATI 3870 512mb for $229 then that would be a good card to get.

as mentioned, newer games with higher texture settings is going to cripple this great performing GPU when paired with only 256mb RAM.
Still, should be a good budget card, prolly overall better then a slower gpu coupled with more RAM, as is often the case in pricier budget cards.
