From some of the reviews i have read Crossfire is scaling better in most games however in single card mode they do fall short. The take more of a hit with AF enabled but from what i hear Nvidia are using a quak in Crysis so quaility wise they fall short close up they are on par but in the distance it more noticable. The quaility seems more effected when you use the scope and you get the blur.

There is the problem with ATi's lineup of CrossFire- in some games the performance scales really well- in others it does not. Across the board performance seems to be very spotty and rather inconsistent. If they can irradicate this issue then CrossFire can become ATi's saving grace as it seems SLi has turned into nVidia's Achille's Heel (indirectly referencing they're crappy chipsets and rather inconsistent and poor SLi scaling in a lot of newer titles).

although ive never been a fan of ATI (right now i only have a laptop with a crappy x1300, and i get bsods all the time :(), i think the 3850s look solid, especially when theyre in crossfire. Im going to trust ATI to release drivers which will fix issues in the latest games.
Even if i go SLI, i will also have issues. SLI is also inconsistent, so whichever way i go (cf or sli), the games my friend will be playing wont be perfectly stable (that is, until drivers are released), but you cant get a single card which can match the performance of 3850s in CF for the price range they are in :D. Then again, like Redeemed said, you get what you pay for :p

They scale better, but from what I've seen, they are still slower than competing SLi cards.

Don't believe everything you hear.

My third rig is going to be an AMD incarnation. Anywho I tried "Crysis" with HD 3850 256Mb cards recently in Crossfire. They are placeholders for HD 3870 X2 cards. I did 1440x and 1680x with a combination of high and medium settings with 4xAF. I also tried all medium with 4xAF @ 1680x to see how high the FPS would go. Details are here-

Beware 56K users. Lots of screens.

thanks backlash, 3850s are looking good. Do you know where i could find similar comparisons against, say, 3850 512mb CF, 3870 CF, or 8800gt SLI?

I've added "Oblivion" to my "Crysis" post @ 1680x 4xAA|8xAF HDR @ 1680x with an untweaked .ini and all detail sliders right, with all on.

Great write up on rage Blacklash. The 3850/3870s are piquing my interest. They seem a great price/performance item.

on rage3d there is someone that watercooled his 3870's and overclocked them in crossfire. Supposedly getting excellent results, I may have to jump on this

If you do soon post results. I've been seeing the 3870 for $219 (BB online special) and the 3850s are around $40-$60 less I think, too lazy to look atm.

should i build the intel system for him, or go with the spider (amd) platform, which supposedly offers optimal results for crossfire?

If i go intel:
e6750, asus p5kc

If i go amd:
AMD Athlon X2 5200+/6000+/Phenom 9500, MSI K9A2 PLATINUM 790FX motherboard

I'm currently Running Crysis on Two EVGA 8800 GTX OC and the performance is top notch. Playing at 1900x1200 on a 24 inch monitor and its a blast. these two crads in sli will let you max that game out. I've played in both DX10 and DX9 on the highest possible settings. I also bought these cards just for Crysis and it was the right choice... If you really want to experience the game I wouldn't go with the 8800GT's or anthing less. you really need the GTX's in SLi to exploit the game for what its worth.

Yeah, that's total BS.
