I know there are other fans of independent games out there. By "independent" I mean games that aren't usually sold in stores and usually do not have publishers. They tend to take more risks, and are usually less flashy but more original than anything you'll find in stores.

Post links, screenshots or info for any games you like, or post links to sites about independent games.

Some of my recommendations:

Zombie Smashers X and Zombie Smashers X2 (http://www.skastudios.vg/) (River City Ransom beat'em'up\RPG clones. Extremely gory, hilarious and addicting.)

Nifflas' games (http://nifflas.ni2.se/index.php?main=01Home) (such as Knytt, a 2d side scrolling adventure\exploration game)

Penumbra:Overture (http://www.penumbra-overture.com/) (first person adventure horror game)

Dink Smallwood (http://www.rtsoft.com/dink/) (action\RPG, plays similar to the old Zelda games but has a bit more mature writing\setting with a lot of humor)

The Ur-Quan Masters (http://sc2.sourceforge.net/) (enhanced remake of Star Control II, an awesome space exploration game with real-time combat, originally for the 3DO and PC)

LieroX (http://iworx5.webxtra.net/~lxallian/LXRS/#) (basically, a real time action-packed version of the classic game "Worms"... similar visuals, but very fast paced gameplay, online support and a server browser!)

Stranded II (http://stranded.unrealsoftware.de/s2_infos.php?PHPSESSID=ec82099a1ca20f5ef9d8bc4d1a5 b59ac) (very unique 3D island survival game that requires you to actually learn how to make tools, gather food and build shelter using logic... don't let the cartoon graphics put you off, this is a LOT of fun!)

Toribash (http://www.toribash.com/) (A turn based, physics-heavy fighting game. Yeah, a turn based fighting game. Its very cool, not to mention hilarious. One of the most unique games I've ever played.)

Cortex Command (http://www.datarealms.com/) (A very physics heavy side scrolling action\strategy game. Its really hard to explain but its very sand-boxy and its a lot of fun.)

Dismount Games (http://jet.ro/dismount/) (Truck dismount and stair dismount. Similar to Toribash in a way. Basically, you have to fling rag dolls in various ways to try to do as much damage to them as possible... obviously, thats loads of fun.)

Yahtzee's Games (http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/games.htm) (Not only does "Yahtzee" make some hilarious game reviews, he makes some awesome old-school adventure games too. I recommend playing the entire "Chzo Mythos" in order. "5 Days a Stranger", "7 Days a Skeptic", "Trilby's Notes" and "6 Days a Sacrifice")

Runescape (http://www.runescape.com/) (A surprisingly fun and addicting free MMORPG. Since you don't have to pay for it, you can pick it up and put it down any time you want without feeling "obligated" just to get your money's worth)

Aquaria (http://bit-blot.com/aquaria/)(I've only just started playing the free demo of this but it seems very cool. Probably one of the most polished indy games I've ever seen. Its also surprisingly complex with a huge open world, RPG elements and recorded dialog.)

And here are some sites that have IMMENSE lists of excellent Independent games:

These two are rather old so the links on them may or may not work, but there are hundreds of great games here:

Have fun! And make sure to post in here if you find something really cool! :D

And if you complete a game, make sure to use the official rating system linked in my sig to give a thorough review. :)

+20 - good one Cap!

I'll be hunting through these for an old top down shooter I got absolutely addicted to. You were in a little blue mech. being attacked by these wormy critters and had to clear out each area - Awesome fun.

I found it on an Australian guys site - very christian type of guy with a ton of free software, then he shut registration down. :(

Sound familiar to anyone?

That actually sounds slightly familiar...

If I come across anything like that I'll post it here. :)

Thanks. Considering the type of game and it's age, it also had great music and sound effects. Wish I could remember that site!

About how long ago did you play it?

And was it on your PC or was it web\flash based?

Check 2 Flash Games:

They have been around for a very long time and have hundreds of flash games.

Though they aren't really organized. :o

Here is a couple that I've enjoyed.

Eshalon: Book I for the old-school rpg fans. Like Aquaria this is suprisingly polished and slick and well presented, though lacks the sheer beauty and artyness of Aquaria.

Gods Lands of Infinity. Ignore the cheap use of the "Slovak erotic and glamour supermodel", it's actually a pretty entertaining turn-based combat rpg game with some actual strategy in the combat.

Full Pipe Awesomely quirky, a little adventure type game.

And a couple I'm keeping my eyes on.

The Path. This one looks interesting and different.

"The Path is a short horror game with a unique form of gameplay, designed to immerse you deeply into the dark themes of its story. Every interaction in the game expresses an aspect of the narrative. "

Braid

"Braid is an action-puzzle game about manipulating the flow of time. To rescue a princess, the player journeys through a series of worlds; in each world, time behaves differently. The game provides a mind-expanding experience that is filler-free, treating the player’s time as precious."

Awesome.

Thanks for posting those!

I just played through the demos of:

Evil Invasion (http://www.vhgames.com/) (top view action\rpg where you slaughter massive waves of monsters that come at you from all angles)

Steam Brigade (http://www.pedestrianentertainment.com/) (very similar to "Glory Days 2" for the Nintendo DS... basically a side scrolling real time strategy game)

The only thing that sucks about Independent games is that there are so many good ones that I'd go broke if I bought\registered all of the ones that interested me.

I've played 5 or 6 in the past 2 days that I thought were worth buying. It'd probably cost me over $100. :o

Yeah, indies are consuming an increasing amount of my gaming budget.

The other thing that can suck about them is just finding whats out there and trying to keep up. A lot of my favourites I stumbled upon by accident or chance and I don't have a great awareness of in-development titles at all.

Thingding just posted this in another thread:

http://www.experimentalgameplay.com/game.php?g=456

Crayon Physics

Basically, everything you draw is turned into an object with realistic physics and you have to draw to solve puzzles.

Very very cool!

Also, there seem to be a lot of really interesting games on that site.

EDIT: :rofl
This game is freaking hilarious...

started playing Aquaria over the weekend as i needed a change from shooters, though viva pinata tho not indie is a nice change too.

Aquaria is a wonderful game to play with music that i really like, great artistry and is fun and magestic and like what has been said very professional. it just needs a patch to enable widescreen support instead of having to use a stretched out mode.

truly lovely game! :luv:

Wow that second screen shot of Mr. Robot reminds me of Crusader too. Those were awesome games back in the day. I bought the Crusader Collection a few years ago to use on my old DOS system.

I played that yesterday. It was alright but it had a few quirks that were consistently bugging me and getting me killed. That boss that was a big moving wall just plain sucked. I stopped playing there. :p
