I haven't seen any comparisons between the 7900 GTX and any of the 8 series cards.

I was just curious to how it compares. I mean is the lowest end 8 series still better than the 7900GTX?

Definitely not.

7900GTX is at least on par with 8600GTS, but probably between it and 8800GTS (old version).

Though not 7900 GTX , my current 8800 GTX outperformed my pair of 7800 GTX in SLI by a huge margin just from the feel of the games, less stutter, more smooth gameplay say around 30+% on average above at highest setting in game with AA and AF applied at 1680 by 1050 or 1900 by 1200 resolutions

In Oblivion , a single 8800GTX was more than 2x faster than a X1900XTX which was slightly faster than a 7900GTX back then.
(i experianced this by putting my older 8800GTX to the XTX head to head).

Don't scare him. He was talking about all of the 8800cards. and a 8400 or 8600 is obviously weaker than the 7900GTX.

Only the 8800 series is stronger than that card.

my 7900gto overclocked is a piece of crap,it lags in most shader demanding games and vista drivers are really bad. im glad it only costed me 270$ cdn. the 8600GTS is definately the choice over the gtx overall.

hmmmm :wtf:

You are creating the psychological effect that the 7900 is really really weak. Where you only compared it to the GTX and not the 8600 and lower cards, which was what he was asking about.

my 8800 GTS blew away my 1900xtx by a good margin.

This is just about dead on. I had an 8800GTS 640 in my old rig I sold, am now using a 7900GTX with a comparable proc and mobo to what I had with the GTS.

The 7900GTX gets me smooth frames in GOW, even Crysis demo is playable with a mix of medium and high settings + Some tweaks.

The GTS had a smoothness and IQ advantage though. Things just looked better.

Am I? I speficially stated 7800 GTX vs 8800 GTX. How owuld a 8800 GTX equate to a 8600??

7 Series doesn't even match up.

I would say the 8800GT is about 10% faster than 2 7900GTX's in SLI do the math.

Any 8800 series card will stomp any 7xxx card.

A 7900GTX is significantly faster than an 8600GTS though. Its really no slouch by any means, even if it is a year and a half old.

i would say its faster than an 8600gts in dx9 games, slower than any 8800 card

I've had my 7950GX2 for 18 months now, and really can't justify buying any 8800 card at the moment. I'm waiting for the next round of cards until i buy. I don't want to shell out for a mediocre upgrade. I want a big upgrade when i buy one, I want to notice the difference. I'm not saying that 8800 cards aren't faster than my old ricketty card, they most definately are, but, not fast enough to make it worthwhile.
Bring on the next round of cards. Faster.......FASTER !!!

The reason I asked this was....

I have the 8800GTX. I HAD the 7900 GTX, which I passed down to my daughter. I had got used to my 8800GTX and had forgotten about the 7900GTX. Well I had played Crysis and Timeshift (8800GTX). I then installed these two games on my daughter's computer and was actually quite stunned how much I had to turn down the settings to get it to run ALMOST as smooth as my 8800GTX. It was night and day. Here at one time I had thought my 7900GTX was the sh*t. A relatively short time later and it can't cope. Heh heh. Needles to say I wasn't too happy with the leap being so fast considering how much I had paid for the 7900GTX when it first came out. It then got me thinking about what version 8 series card begins to pass the 7900GTX.

Yeah the 8800GTX was really a phenomenal card. Its hard to believe its over a year old already.

The 7900 series still do alright though. I just built a system for a friend using a 7900GT 256Mb and it ran the Crysis demo fine at 1024x768 with medium settings. I was surprised at how playable it was for the quality of the graphics. The rig was under $500 too. Quite a lot of power for not much money. :)

I just upgraded from a 7900 GTO to a 8800GT and in many games you can hardly tell the difference because I game at 1680x1050. But in newer games like BioShock the 8800GT is about twice as fast when comparing in game FRAPS scores. I enjoy the extra AA I can turn on i the older games now. Makes things look just that much better.

On my actual system, with my fav game @ 1280x1024:

1 x 7900GTX 512MB (690/1750):
no AA: 115 fps / MSAA 4x: 85 fps / SSAA 2x: 55 fps

1 x 8800GTX (615/2200):
no AA: 130 fps / MSAA 4x: 130 fps / SSAA 2x: 100 fps

For me it's 2x times faster with SSAA. For the rest of games, little difference, unless you raise the AA/AF level.

How much can you sell a 7900GTX for though? I wonder if it would be worth it to sell mine and get an 8800GTS or even 8800GTX with my current rig- Then upgrade rig around the new card.

Or should I wait until I get an entirely new CPU/mobo/mem combo to get 8800 series? I imagine I could get a lot higher framerate in newer games even without a new Intel CPU, etc... if I had an 8800GTX in there, especially when it comes to AA and AF levels.

I just stepped up to the 8800 Ultra SLI which I'll have all setup by next week sometime. These cards should last me awhile since I will not waste a dime on going tri-sli. Now I wouldn't mind going with two 9800 GTX in SLI!!!!

You should be able to get $125 - $175 pretty easily for the 7900GTX, maybe more on ebay. You would absolutely see a nice improvement with an 8800GTS/GTX, but this close to a new release it would be worth it to wait, imho.

I'm running a 7900GTX also, and waiting....

The value of the 7900GTX dropped fast, that's for sure.

They are going for between $130 and $200 on ebay. And ebay prices are about as high as you'll get. I wouldn't expect more than $150 from one honestly.

Which is too bad for people who have them... but very good for people looking for a kick ass mid range card.

how does my 7950gt 512 agp stand up with the 7900 gtx? the limiting factor in my rig is the cpu. it's 2.66 p4 and the mobo can only support 400/533 fsb cpus. I did not realize this at the time and did not upgrade to the 8800gtx rig I had planed.:( I'll probably wait for summer 08 to build a new computer.

p.s. how much do you think I can get for it now?

EDIT: my this is depressing I can't find the card anywhere (excluding ebay) it seem that xfx has discontinued it.:(

EDIT 2: it's not on ebay ether:(
