When will a program ever come close to using 1gb of ram on such a basic core such as the 8500gt? :thumbdwn:

Your not kidding there. 256MB on that card is probably enough to keep up with the core. I'm sure people will buy it though because they think it should be faster since it has 1GB of vram instead of 512MB.

To even come close to using all the memory you would need really high res and ultra high textures, the 8500 core would probably just set on fire :o

Gah... thats horrible.

The 8500gt is pretty damned slow. Its like half the speed of the 8600GT, which is almost the same speed as a 7600GT.

What a mess this is. I bet you could "upgrade" from a 1Gb 8500GT to a 128Mb 6800 NU. :p

They are just preying on the unfortunate people who have little knowledge on what to look for in a card. They'll see 1gb of RAM and think 'ooh that must be really fast'.

There is always those un-informed who think More VRAM > GPU Power .. they'll be like flies over it. actually i even know some personally.

A friend of mine has been a strictly PC gamer for a very long time, but his family (who ALL play games) doesn't really upgrade their PCs too often so he's completely clueless when it comes to hardware.

I talked to him a few months ago and he was talking about being interested in Hellgate London. I told him it'd probably have pretty hefty requirements and he said "well I just bought a 256 meg card not too long ago". When I hear anyone use the word "meg" I immediately worry.

I asked him, "do you know what kind of card it was?" and he said "I think it was a radeon 9550 or something like that".

:headexplode:

I was probably a bit too blunt, but I've known this kid for so long and he still hasn't gone to a review site and researched components. I told him "I don't think that'll play it. The 9550 is very old. The number of megabytes isn't whats important, its the name of the chip". And he was actually surprised to hear this.

:headexplode:

You guys know me. I would not have let this kid play PC games for this long without telling him how graphics cards work any time he mentions upgrading. :p

And it's 1GB of DDR2 ram.

Well they have to move that ram somehow eh....why not move it on the gulible?

That's plain out crazy. 1Gb on a low end card. Definitely preying on the people who think more megabytes = better. I know a lot of people that think that way. And they're really surprised when I tell them that it's not all about number of megabytes.

Yep.

GeForce® 8500GT 1GB equipped with avant-garde 1024MB super memory size which allows the users to escape from memory capacity bottlenecks.

But the bus architecture and the operating frequency of the memory also factors into the memory bandwidth, not just "memory capacity"

This is independent of the GPU problem.
