get the CCCP from http://www.cccp-project.net/, it has the most recent spin off of ffdshow as its main decoder. Also use the media player classic player that comes with it for best compatibility and performance using ffdshow. This will only work for xvid, h264, and maybe WMV9 HD, although you are prolly best leaving wmv files to microsofts own codec.

.mov files of course are best playd with quicktime still.

Your cpu should play any 720p stuff fine, but 1024p may be to much.

You can also try GOP (thats the name of the player) and VNC, both are players that rely on a set of built in internal decoders. These yield better compatibility and performance, but arnt as good quality wise.

thx thats what I needed.
and for quicktime. I just install it and set movies to play in mpc ,then it opens .mov just as quicktime player

I know you don't want to install a player, but GOM and VLC (not GOP and VNC :rofl) are great if you just need playback. There are no messy codecs to mess up your system.

If it's a HTPC then you'll want proper codec, the mentioned CCCP is great, but if you want to do on the fly encoding to a console, I've found the k-lite pack is a little better.

I had to search out 64bit vista codecs to get all video working here at Bigmans but all is good now. I had to hunt down certain divx 64 drivers too.

The one pack that I've been using recently is the all inclusive pack. I got tired of trying to find codecs for Flac, OGG, OGM, Divx, Xvid, and a bunch of other weird formats that people seem to like to encode files too.

The pack is called the A.C.E Mega codec pack http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ACE_Mega_CoDecS_Pack.htm

The only time I've have problems with having it installed was for some reason the coreflac codec and FEAR do not like each other. I just had to disable that codec and everything was good to go.

CCCP caused HD decoding to run really jumpy, k-lite works alot better.

don't like either k-lite or cccp, those install way to much crap that you don't need.

that pack has a lot of pirated codecs, (mainconcept, canopus, divx pro, cyberlink, elecard etc..)

how can a pack released on 2007-07-22, have latest version of ffdshow?

You do realize that there is a new version of ffdshow about 3 times a week?

I use KMPlayer, it plays pretty much all stuff, no need to mess up system with stupid codecs :)

when it comes to codecs, the least you have the better, having galizion of codecs installed will cause issues.

That's why I use the GOM. The GOM help me stay regular.

Did I just type vnc? damnit! I try my best to seperate those damn programs in my head.

GOP, GOM, actually VLC is allways my first choice when a video dosnt wanna play right in zoom player so I rarly ever use GOM. ;)

Huh, I thought ffdshow had actually stoped well over a year ago as per source forge, and that cccp was actually the old ffsdhow but with a few small updates. I see some file dumps have some files dated rescently.. but is there actually a web site with info and a change log for the new ffdshows?

There still going strong. And now alot of Codecs are moving to 64bit also for those using MCE in vista.

All I ever install are.... (Individually, screw codec packs)

XviD
AC3 DirectShow FIlter
DivX 3.1 ;-)
Lame MP3 ACM
Haali Media Splitter (For Matroska Support)
OGG Vorbis
QuickTime
PureVideo (For MPEG2)
PowerDVD (For HD)

And some WMV codecs for converting to AVI, cuz I hate WMV; unless its WMV HD which is cool.

I have yet to encounter anything I haven't been able to play without issue.

You forgot....

All Codecs Needed + Some that are not needed + causes conflicts with some software/games + Installs other software that is useless + pointless all around

Codec Packs are for newbs

Besides, Installing the above takes a whole 3 minutes, so besides the "convenience" of having an "all-in-one" pack has no benefit to me.
