Hey guys, was wondering if you could assist my friend here, he just got $120.00 from his gf for his b-day and wants to use it to get a new graphics card, i asked him if he could put any of his own money in to get a 3850 or 8800gt 256mb (mine), but he said the max he can put it is like 20 bucks and he only plays Steam games and will probably be getting COD4. So i told him a XFX 8600 GT XXX edition? was i right or any other suggestions...

P.S. Nvidia only, hes one of those guys hehe, i guess i am too but more flexible. Also he has a AMD processor, if thats important...

Seems to be all he can afford. If he could spare about $250, an 8800 GT is 10x better than an 8600 GTS XXX edition.

Yea i know but just for CS:S and COD4, isnt the 8600 GT XXX okay, plus i heard he can play Crysis on like medium or low, he doesnt care PLUS he uses a 800 x 600 resolution for his games....

By the way whats better the 8600 GT XXX 256mb edition or a 8600 GTS 256mb edition?

The GTS is better, but honestly the 8600s are not a very good series. Tell him to save up for a bit longer for at least a 3850, he won't regret it.

Good comparison between the 8600GTS and the 3850: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3151&p=8

man2cool, honestly, the best bang for the buck are the new 8800's just released. I think they are a little bit more expensive..but except for the gtx's which were allready three times the cost, they are at the top of the heap. They will run everything today and tomorrow. Buying anything for a few bucks less just means tomorrow you will be buying the 8800gt.

PLUS he uses a 800 x 600 resolution for his games....An 8600 GTS or even an 8600 GT will suffice.

The good news is that I was able to locate an 8600 GTS for $99 (with rebate). The bad news is that it's out of stock.

The 8600 GT is available though for $83.50 (with rebate).

You may also want to look into the GeForce 7900 Series. Much faster with AA enabled since they have a 256-bit memory bus. And at 800x600, a litttle AA would be helpful.
