uhhh....noob question.... but... I was going to buy this game when I came across this thread. My question is, do I need to download Live for Windows and all the visual C++ updates if I only intend to play in offline mode, singleplayer ??

Yes. You do. Even in offline single, Live is still active.

Hi
Are you sure about this ? I read somewhere that Games for Windows LIVE is for online multiplayer gaming. So, if I intend to stick to SinglePlayer only, why would I be required to install it ?

nutcrackr
12-23-07, 06:07 AM
because it keeps your saves with your gamer profile afaik that is remote server. I guess this is because of the achievement points, people could just modify or copy the saves?

LordJuanlo

It automatically installs with the game, so you better update it after installing because that version is quite buggy. And about profiles, you can create online and offline profiles, just like on the Xbox. Offline profiles are stored in your PC, but it still uses the Windows Live software

Thank You ! Its NOW clear !
Just one more question. After installing the game, can I straightaway download and install the latest release of Live for Windows, 1.2 OR should I first download and install Live for Windows 1.1 and THEN 1.2 ?

LordJuanlo

You can skip 1.1 and install only 1.2

The page that your link points to states that the System Requirements for this installation are users running Windows XP. Nowhere does it state that Windows Vista users should install this package.... I don't think Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit users like myself are required to install it at all !

Just installed it.

OMG,, WHAT A PIECE OF CRAP.

1) installer.. doesn't care were you set it. it goes onto C:..
(obviously only happy path testing occurred in QA.. A VERY bad sign)
takes 30+ minutes to install, and doesn't give you a damn clue whats going on. I though my system was locking up. :thumbdwn:
(In my office = a severity 1 error)

2) REQUIRES ms-LIVE account to be setup, even for single player.
aggghhhhhhhhh :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn:
(You've got to be kidding me.)

3) they didn't even bother to hide the xbox controller tips (A,B,x, ...)
(um, this is a freaking PC.):thumbdwn: :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn:
Jesus f*&^^&%^&^&%&*^* Christ

4) gameplay: plays like a POS console.
:thumbdwn: :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn:

verdict after 10 minutes of game play: What a Fuc*%^ing waste of my time.
Graphics: Poor (even on maximum) Obviously ZERO effort for PC's more capable than an x-box.

gameplay: if you like playing console interface games on your PC. (I don't)
user interface: poor
sound: okay (should be better) basic stereo
overall: 4 out of 10. not bad for a 2003/2004 pc game. sucks in 2007. (far cry was better)

A VERY VERY VERY poor console port. Get the Orange Box

MS should be embarrassed to have their name on it.
The only bright spot: I didn't buy it. may regift it.

It requires an offline account for single player. This IS NOT the same as a online account. An offline account is just the same as entering your name as most games to to create a profile for you.

As for the controller X,A,B stuff. That will appear only if you have a 360 controller plugged in. Unplug it and it will default to showing the keys. If it doesn't do this buy the game instead of pirating it. This is a bug common to pirate versions.

The game was ok...It looked pretty solid..but the story..was pretty...dull...its like getting into a middle of a movie..and playing from there..without watching the start..i finished it though..last boss..was a lame one.

I love the game and didnt have any of the issues that are troubling you besides the long install time but I did have a progress window so I know exactly what was going on.

Gears of war is a great game on the PC and anyone thinking about getting it should pretty much ignore this guys obvious hatred for a great game.

Don't install it if you don't have problems, anyway here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=200b2fd9-ae1a-4a14-984d-389c36f85647&displaylang=en) is the link for Vista x86 and here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=EB4EBE2D-33C0-4A47-9DD4-B9A6D7BD44DA&displaylang=en) for Vista x64. I installed them both.
