View Full Version : Do you still play arcade games ? Where are they ?
Do you still play arcade games ? I am not talking about those freaking japanese games that you jump-jump, or dance, I am talking about "old" style like, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, racing games ( not those that you seat in a play car to race). I mean, those arcade where you play with that small stick, and buttons, and you are always stand up.
BTW, I havenīt heard anything about great or good releases for almost 3 years, nor I see new games like those I cited above in arcade houses for much longer. What about you guys ?

Every once and a while after work I stop in the local arcade and go strait to the back to play Ms. Pacman, Galaga (FAV), Asteroids, Rygar, and all the old stuff i used to play back in the day. Thier only a quarter a piece and i can be there for a couple hours and only spend a few bucks.
It's getting pretty sad around there these days, half the place is filled with dancing machines and five year old shooters (TIME CRISIS 2, BLAh), I don't think the arcade bussiness is doing very well since next gen systems have the better graphics for the moment.

Tekken 4. House of the Dead (any of them). Time Crisis 1 and 2. Any vertical airplane shooter (i.e. 1942, etc). Daytona USA. I cannot get enough of that game. Hydro Thunder. Just to name a few. I don't make it a habit to visit the arcades, but if Im near one I usually stop in for a couple hours.

There hasn't been a good arcade game in years. Even Soul Caliber 2 didn't create the kind of stir that a good arcade game like it would have 5 years ago. I loved the days when I'd go into the arcade and there were five Mortal Kombat 3 machines, with about 20 people crowding around them all. That has just ended. When I go to an arcade today, I find myself playing the old games and the shooters.

there is one arcade game tho that was my fav and I can't remember what it is called, kinda some guy that looks like conan goin' around killin' bad guys and dead stuff back in the day lol, kinda old too:lol:
and there are these guys that steal your stuff, boy did those guys piss me off haha!
There is still an arcade in our local mall. There are some really big, extravagant and disgustingly expensive arcades in the city (NYC). For the most part arcades have been dying out mainly due to the fact that a home console's graphics have become on par with what thousand dollar arcade boards use to do. There is simply no market for Model3 class boards anymore. Most current arcade cabinets are based on console tech anyways; PlayStation2 (System246), Dreamcast (Naomi1/2), GameCube (TriForce), Xbox (Chihiro) or PS1 (System11/12).
That being said, Sega/Namco are still around. The best fighting game in existence to me is Virtua Fighter 4 and its Naomi2 visuals dwarf what the PlayStation2 verison can do. Virtua Fighter4 Evolution was released not too long ago and thats even better. Of course you have Soul Calibur II (System246).
Some up coming arcade games include F-Zero AC (Sega/TriForce) and StarFox Armada (Namco/TriForce). You've got Virtua Cop3 and Outrun2 (both Chihiro).
Sega just merged with Sammy (GuiltyGear series, all those quirky Japanese life simulators) and are still the dominant player in the arcade industry. TriForce news has died down, but if its even remotely successful we could see Nintendo trying to get back on the scene. Naturally Konami is still making tons of money on DDR.
If your lucky enough, there are still some killer Model3 games out there (Sega Rally2, Daytona2, VOOT, Lost World and of course my favorite, SuperGT). Sega will always be the king to me, they've got Naomi3 in the pipeline, hopefully some restructuring with Sammy will help them get back to their former glory.
Forgot to add, over the last 3 years, the games that I have played the most outside VF4 and Model3 titles were Ikaruga, Monkey Ball, Beach Spikers, Street Fighter Zero Upper, and Guilty Gear XX: Midnight Carnival. You can play them on Dreamcast/PS2/GameCube now though.
For 2003, looking forward to playing Guilty Gear XX # Reload, Time Crisis 3 and I'm still looking for a House of the Dead 3 cabinet. Also I expect a new Ridge Racer game soon but I think those are coming to console first, and Playmore may be bringing out new SNK titles (hell yeah!).
Unfortunately, US arcades are nothing compared to Japan's. It is only there that you can get your arcade lust satisfied. Naturally I speak of Club Sega in Akihabara and Joypolis in Tokyo. I feel like such a moronic tourist trying to get around over there, but the humiliation is worth it.

lesse, my fav arcade games now are Tekken 4, and I also like that boxing game where you actually put on gloves, and duck and weave, same thing with that cop game where you shoot and duck and stuff, all while it tracks you...
I also like the Time Crisis series, and House of the Dead 8.
That Harley game where you sit on the bike is cool, along with the Hydro Thunder, Rush 2049 (or whatever year they picked out of their butts), and that snow speeder game similar to hydro thunder, good stuff!

GOLDEN AXE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was a great arcade game.... it was fun for the genesis too.
I liked playing it 2 player..... ahh, the good ol days... :)
I still remember the first day I played this arcade game that looked REAL and had a bazillion buttons.... it was a fighting game and everyone moved like real people.... Mortal Kombat! Heh, the next year I had it for my SNES :)
Our Mall used to have a great arcade, but that was gone 5 or 6 years ago. Too bad too.... how many of you (like me) still look at quarters as a SPECIAL kind of coin? Its not just 25 cents, its round or two of Golden Axe....
ahh... memories :)
