View Full Version : Western Digital MyBook External Hard Drive Review
Hey Guys, I picked up an external hard drive a couple of weeks ago while I was at Costco.
Check it out here - http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/wd_mybook_500gb/index.shtml

As the amount of data residing on our home network continues to increase, I began to take a serious look at our backup strategy. Although our network consists of four Windows-based personal computers, regular backups are only taken of my PC, which doubles as the primary test system during graphics card reviews.

Nice review. A lot of these simple reviews on other sites tend to get too long-winded.
Is this the version with the DRM software? The one that limits which file types you can copy over your network and the 'net with it that is.
My only problem with WD MyBook drives is the one year warranty. A friend of mine had his die on him after the first year and got hosed. That's why I still go with internal drive + enclosure personally.
Nice review.
Was going to ask, can you use ie windows explorer.....or have to use WD's software?
Personally was thinking of getting extra HDD space but, dunno which an internal drive or an external drive like the product in review. After conferring with colleagues at work, they were recommending me external drives such as the review product.

Great review. One of these plus Acronis is the prefect combo.
All you need to do now is fix the mistake on the front page.

I have a 160GB version of that HDD, and it works wonderfully. It's very fast for an external HDD, and it's very responsive as a small file server.

This version didn't contain any DRM software.

Yes, the drive works great under Explorer. It's currently assigned as the K: drive.
The ease of use of an external drive sold me. The performance also had to be good.

Thanks for the review, I have been looking at external hard drives for about a week, and i found from what people posted as comments on various sites that a lot fail much quicker then internal hard drives, why that is I do not know.
I am tempted to get this one after seeing this review and give it a shot.
Nice review. Seems we are needing more and more storage at home and this is a simple and effective add-on remedy.

I have the 320GB version of that drive, and I love it. I haven't bothered to install the software that came with it though. I just use it as an external backup drive through explorer.
I have a 500GB MyBook too (with the green light instead).
The only annoyance I had with it was that I forgot to reformat it from FAT32 to NTFS. So it would not store DVD images above 4GB... minor annoyance but still.

That's cool. So confirmed no DRM, and you do not have to use their software.
Now to choose, between, Zalman Resorator XT or an external HDD or new case... or a quadcore Q6600...hmm

just quick question is MyBook essentials same hardware as the one reviewed here which I think is premium?
I see it at best buy on sale for $120 which is a pretty good price I think if so I will run and pick one up today. Thanks
