So. Anything important I should know about upgrading?
Any good 64 bit programs i need to know about?

No. All the good 64bit programs come with 64bit Vista. Like IE, Media Player. The 32bit versions are there to. Remember flash only works on a 32bit browser.
You should notice a little more response too, seeing as all of your RAM can now be accessed.

will firefox work?

Yup. I use the default 32bit version myself, but there are a lot of 64bit builds out there. Most use Firefox's code name Bon Echo though, so remember that if you decide to google for them. I recommend sticking to the 32bit version for compatibility with addons and plugins.

I just went 64-bit myself today :) Been about 6 hours now and I finally have all my drivers and utilities installed.... next comes the games.... gonna be a long night :) Remember to hit F8 before startup so you can disable Driver Signing... I forgot to do that and ran into some issues with RivaTuner and CoreTemp. Also, make sure any codec's you need can run in a 64-bit OS. DivX is the biggie and it works fine in 64-bit :) Mostly just been a pain in the ass finding all the 64-bit versions of everything I need driver wise, other than that smooth so far. Nice to be able to see all 4gigs of memory, also my windows score jumped to 5.8 from 5.3 from the switch... perhaps because im on a faster hard drive now? Beats me... im not complaing.. :p Luckly I dual booted with my 32-bit Vista incase of issues but as long as everything works that I need to use I will stick with 64-bit. The only issue I am having is the sound on my X-Fi does not sound as good as it used too... but it could just be me forgetting to set something somewhere I had set on my other install.

That's only if you're using the 32-bitversion of vista.

There MAY be an issue when installing Vista, be it 64 or 32 if you have 4gb of RAM. I installed mine fine with 4gb BUT if you do have problems install it with 2gb, then chuck the rest back in after it's installed.

ONLY the retail version of Ultimate has both 32 and 64 bit DVDs. All other retail versions you have to send away for the discs. I think there is no charge EXCEPT for the postage.
With OEM if you bought 32bit, you have to buy the 64bit version on top... I think. Not sure about OEM.

nvstor? Sounds like it's to do with the Nforce SATA drivers. Make sure you have the latest nforce drivers.

I do. It hasnt happened again. But it did happen twice.
crainger
12-27-07, 07:44 PM
Before or after you put the nforce drivers on? If it's before perhaps the builtin Vista ones are a bit flakey.

Hope so. Nothing worse than installing an OS only to find it breaks more than it fixes.
