What about reliability? I have never owned a samsung drive before.

samsung
3 platters at 333.3gb
runs cooler
less noise
denser platter = higher read speed, been prooven over time, to increase speed companies eiher had to raise RPM (Raptor) or make platters denser

according to info on storagereview.com samsung are very reliable, i personally have one 500gb for about 3 years.

Samsung needs to make 1 and 2 platter models of that drive with the same density. The extra speed would be nice, but with all of the space I have, I just don't see myself needing another whole TB of space any time soon.

Hitachi still making the 'deathstars'?

I think they're probably a lot better now, but Seagate, Samsung and WD are the only brands I would get. And I personally stay away from WD because I've seen so many fail in pre-built systems over the years.

I personally had 2 IBM deathstars crap out on me in the matter of weeks and had seen numerous others die. This was back in 2000 and I still wouldn't buy them today. They are still made by the same manufacturer, they just ditched the IBM name. IMO, They should have ditched the Deskstar name to help the line sell.

:headexplode: what

Hitachi makes excellent drives, nothing like what IBM used to make. Can't compare those drives

For everyone who buys one sake, I hope so. Hitachi did buy IBMs drive operations about 5 years ago. That's after the time IBM fell off with poor quality drives. IBM did have the fastest drives then, but they were a time bomb.

yes, old IBM drives were bad, but there is nothing left from the old design. For the firt 6-12 months Hitachi did use IBM design, but then everything was changed, new boards, new chips, new platter tech, motors changed.

Sounds good to me then, If I had an extra $300 to throw around I would get one. My 320 is almost to the brim.
