View Full Version : 9800 GTX rumoured specs....and I mean rumoured
http://forums.vr-zone.com/showthread.php?t=218890
No source but here it is,
- Codenamed G100
- 65nm process
- 256 shader processors
- 780MHz core clock
- 3200MHz memory clock
- 512-bit memory width
- 2048MB (256X8) GDDR5 chips
- GDDR5 @ 0.25-0.5ns
- Dual DVI-out
- Supports DX 10.1, VP3
- 15-25% lower TDP than 8800GTS
hmm...dunno about the GDDR5 and 2GB mem but, better start saving but, the 256 SP would go in line with a teraflop prediction by NVIDIA assuming the SP's haven't changed much. With GTX its like withing a whisker of 0.400 teraflops. Double the SPs with other architectural improvements, you could have 1 teraflop....or sumthing
Also TDP is a bit suspect since there should be twice the amount of transistors supposedly on the same manufacturing process

I think the Mem might be a little overkill, but honestly the rest of that might not be too far off. Higher clock is quite possible and double the shaders would make sense in order to double the performance. Vr-zone is usually a little more accurate with their predictions IMO so some of these specs might be true.

Less power consumption with a significantly more powerful chip just doesn't make any sense to me.
Also, it doesn't follow the new naming scheme.

i'm skeptical.
but we'll see. I hate to think what it would cost if it does come out like that.

So if it comes out in Feb... shouldn't some more reliable specs be appearing soon?

Well if it is true, it will probably be the last high end card we'll be seeing from Nvidia for quite a while considering it would bury ATI.

I don't think it'd really bury them any more than they are already in the high end enthusiast market.
ATI hasn't been competing in that area since the 8800GTX was released over a year ago, and they haven't made any progress.
They are picking up some steam with the 3870 and 3850 in the mainstream enthusiast market though. If the 9600GT rumors are true, THAT is what ATI should worry about.

If what is known about the 3870x2 turns out to be true, and ATi prices it competitively against the 9600GT... then they should be alright.

Dream on... 2GB memory... I don't think so but it sure would be great!
I dunno, there's alot on the web about Samsung expecting to have half the new high-end graphics cards in the world running GDDR5 by 2010. There's other reports of them selling their DRAM well below 'normal' prices. NVidia and ATI have both had samples of the GDDR5 RAM since early this year. I wouldn't say it's out of the question by any means, but 2Gb of the stuff might be. Fingers crossed :)
GDDR5 is already in testing and is believed to eventually find its way into upcoming video cards and eventual video game consoles; full-scale production is set for the first half of 2008 and is likely to appear first in very high-end cards such as NVIDIA's GeForce 9 series and future Radeon HD 3000-series cards. More than half of all high-end computer graphics will use GDDR5 by 2010, according to Samsung.

oh boy there goes that "if" statement. You do so well with adding "if" to every statement with ATI. Of course it never stands true. :P

So what will be the deal this time...
first released cards are stock 9800 GTX's...
Then several months down the road we get 9800 GTX Ultra's and several over clocked, water cooled versions.
I am waiting a bit this time and not just jumping out and buying the first cards that come out.

Isn't the X2 card supposed to be the new highend model?

The shader clock is unknown. You need it to calculate the Flops of the card: Flops = #SPs * Shader Clock * #Ops per clock.
I think that the shader clock should be higher than on the GTX, prolly close to the 8800GT/GTS (G92). Perhaps 1.5 GHz. -> 256 * 1500 * 2 (MADD) = 768 GFlops.
For 1 Tflop, you need a shader clock of 2 GHz, or a higher number of Ops per clock. -> 256 * 1350 * 3 = 1 Tflop
But the memory bandwidth 3.2GHz * 512bit = 200 GB/s :drooling::drooling::drooling:
Anyway, there's no GDDR5 at Samsung page yet:

Just a press release about GDDR5 & 6 Gbit/s per pin:

Sounds like a fake, but, we can dream :)

I don't think they're aimed at the same markets. The 9600GT will most likely be fast enough to beat the single 3850 cards and should fill in the sub-$200 price segment. Right now, the only things making the 3850 cards worth buying are the performance for under $200 and the multimedia features. There really isn't much competition from nvidia in those areas. If nvidia releases a faster card at a lower price point, they will steal most of the 3850 sales. If they also give it the proper multimedia features, they will steal all of the 38xx sales.
EDIT: Well, it looks like the 9600GT could be the "kick em while they're down" card, because there is already an 8800GS with HDMI in the works, and it will most likely be enough overtake the 3850 series:

It's only in China right now, but it shouldn't take long for to hit the rest of the world.

I was thinking that the main post says: "3200MHz memory clock / GDDR5 @ 0.25-0.5ns"
I think it means chips able to run at 1/0.5 = 2 GHz * 2 (DDR) = 4 GHz, and on a 512bit bus, that's 256 GB/s :drooling:
