Vista SP1 RC1 Flies Past Vista RTM and Windows XP SP2 - But it also hits a speed bump when it comes down to network transfers

The network speeds and HD speeds are just awful in Vista, even in SP1.

since vista does a LOT of hd caching, it is most likely that hdd speeds are down, and even in the winrar benchmark its performance is down more than 30% due to hd caching.

But that's ok, I don't run a network. So everything else is the leetness.

They can't even read a chart properly.

Pcmark05 increased from 10403 to 10493. Is that the 15% they claim?!!? All I see in the picture is nearly identical scores for Vista RTM vs SP1 RC. What the hell are they smoking? Vista RC1 performs the same or WORSE compared to Vista RTM, except that measly increase in PCMark05.
Any of you *tried* SP1 RC?
I have...
And SP1 does improve performance, especially network performance.
Now over 100Mbit network I copy files with speeds over 10Mbytes/sec - faster than in XP - used to get 3.5Mbytes/s with Vista RC.
File copy may be a little slower than in XP, but nothing that would worry me.
However, performance in games is still quite slower than in XP, and this is a big bummer for me.

Tried it for 2 days and rolled back. I didn't like the idea that I had to uninstall before putting the normal SP1 on the system. Too much shuffling around.
Well i got a Q6600 with a extra 2GB of memory(totaling to 4GB) ... i installed them both then done a fresh install of vista, installed updates through windows then installed the SP1 RC, now i dont know if its the service pack, extra memory or the new quad core or even a combination of all three but i know one thing .... the difference i notice now compared to before is massive! .... runs really fast, smooth, boots up & shuts down alot faster and is rock stable! .... i havent had one crash, BSOD or error! ... really happy here.

It's probably the memory. I went Quad, 4GB and RAID0 pretty much all at once, with service pack 1 not long after. Vista is very speedy. :) Though I don't know why. ::o:

Yup, in some cases networking still sux though. Overall still not up to speed with XP. Most the problem with Vista Networking is when using Gigabit BTW, not 10/100.
Games are still slower for me as well. I guess what that review shows is that there are still big problems that need to be sorted with Vista.
Well, I got only 100Mbit network at home, and for those Vista is faster than XP.
No comment for 1Gb tho, as didnt try it.
Games are still slower than XP, but as I said before, Vista *is* running more smoothly now.
Actually, nowdays I use it as my main OS.
... if I just could get some decent DVB program to work on Vista 64 with my SS2 ...

you can disable Superfetch though. just disable the service.
4 min in XP vs 13 min in Vista SP1... wow!

yep and then the disks performance still down about 10mb/s on mine. sp1 rc1 kinda sucks as it breaks games such as GoW, Warcraft 3. i really want vista as my main os, but with these problems sp1 rc1 brings the official better be more like a SP1.5. im back on my 7 year old xp home edition copy with SP3, and things are the fastest yet.

Yes - this is what I've been trying to tell people about gigabit and Vista, it's awful!!! Try moving 20 GB... takes 10 mins in XP and like 2 hours in Vista. Vista's networking sux. SP1 is better but still not even close.
