View Full Version : eSata on ICH8R/ICH9R

Is eSata supported on Intel ICH8R/ICH9R chipsets? WD MyBook (1TB) does not work when connected to SATA (1-6) ports on Asus Commando (P965 chipset), yet it works fine using Firewire and/or USB 2.0.

Do I need a special eSata card, or just new Vista (x64) drivers?

It's gotta be supported a whole bunch of the p35 boards with the ICH9R have eSATA ports.

Most boards with eSATA have special chipset for it, not using ICH8/9R for external connectors. WD MyBook does not work (using eSATA interface) when being connected to internal SATA 1 to 6 ports. Either it is faulty (and I will RMA it), or ICH8/9R does not provide eSATA support (and I will purchase add-on PCIe 1x card).

That's true but I think that the ICH9R at least supports eSATA.

See this review:

Maximus Formula (DDR2) has no eSATA ports, while Maximus Extreme (DDR3) does, but only by using JMicron JMB363.

Anybody with real-life experience about eSATA support on ICH9R?

// edit: X38+ICH9R does support eSATA :-)

eSATA/Port Multiplier - SATA interface designed for use with external SATA devices. Provides a link for 3 Gb/s data speeds to eliminate bottlenecks found with current external storage solutions. Intel also supports natively port multipliers. Combining port multipliers, eSATA, and Intel Matrix Storage Technology provides great flexibility and expandability for external storage solutions.
