View Full Version : Question about what to do (SLI or 1 card?)

I'm thinking of buying a 8800GTS 512mb for $360~

Should I instead buy two 8800GT 256mb for $400 and do SLI?

Which one will be faster?

What resolution do you play at? 2 8800GT 256 SLI would be faster than a single GTS 512, but limited by the vRAM.
I see you have a GTS 640, perhaps you could buy a second one for very cheap now and SLI those?

Unfortunately the price of the old GTS hasn't really gone down though.

You might could find one at ebay at a good price.

raiden, I dont think I would do sli unless it was with 512 megs or more. A bunch of todays high end games are going past 256 megs and that will cause performance issues that could devastate an sli setup.

I agree. 256MB is not enough. Remember, you don't get twice the memory from SLI.

go with the single GTS and then in the future you will have the ability to throw one more in. That way you wont be limited by having two gt cards in the future and no room for more unless you swap both out.

Geeting a 256MB card would limit you too much.
Get a 512MB gt or gts, you can still get another one later.

Yeah I've concluded that I'm going to buy 1x512 G92 8800GTS right now. I'll add another 8800GTS G92 later.

The buy one now, buy one later, though sounds like a plan, in reality, depending on how 'later' you are talking about, means that there will be a new single card out that will be faster than your cards in Sli.

Personally, I start out with Sli and run them as long as I can. When I rebuild, I do it the same way.

My last rig was 7800GTX Sli. Lasted me well and that rig actually still does pretty good since it has an Opteron170@3.0Ghz.

Hopefully I will get just as much use from these 8800GTS's too in this rig too.
