View Full Version : 8800GTS (G92) can't handle overclocking in 2D ?

Ended up buying a Gainward 8800GTS 512 (reasons to follow). Problem with the card is overclocking, all the games and 3D tests are stable, yet when I try to watch a movie it will crash at some point with corrupted display. Anyone else experienced this ?

Now for my motivation in buying this card, I feel like owing an explanation after expressing my disappointment (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=1467414&postcount=39) of the G92 GTS. Initially I wanted to get a GT and sell my 640 G80 GTS "in time" (like I said in the original thread). Nobody had a GT in stock in mid December and prices started to get up to the point where a Gigabyte 8800GTS 512 was about 30 Euros more than a better brand 8800GT (EVGA, Gainward, Asus). Well, Gigabyte wasn't also in stock, but one shop could get me Gainward. Had to make a quick decision if I want it, was certainly more expensive, in the end said what the heck I needed a Christmas present anyway. :D

I gotta say Im struggling to overclock this GTS any, if at all. Im thinking it might be a gainward thing.

Increase the fan speed, 70-80% shouldn't be that noisy, I keep mine at 80%. As for clocks, 750/1875/1050, I expected a bit more from the memory.
Anyway, for the first time in 8 months I can keep my case closed, I love the new cooler. :)

Hey um.... why would you want to overclock 2d? I mean 2d runs just fine... right?

And why would you expect more out of the ram than the extra 200mhz + you already got ?

Yeah?

Im struggling to get rivatuner to work on Vista64, so I might install the gainward crap again unless anyone has a better suggestion?

I don't want to overclock 2D, problem is we no longer have the option of overclocking separately (2D & 3D clocks). From what I can remember the 167.xx and 169.xx drivers don't allow this anymore.

Correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't the G92 GTS have 1.0ns memory ? I could do 1050MHz with the G80 GTS which had 1.1ns memory (the model I had, for the majority it was 1.2ns). Plus, some reviews reported 1080-1100MHz results for the memory. In the end you're probably right, maybe I'm just picky, was spoiled by the 500MHz overclock with the previous card without taking into account the fact that GDDR3 is starting to reach its limits.

Yeah?

Umm, sorry, still using XP here. :D
Maybe this (http://forum.guru3d.com/showpost.php?p=2528757&postcount=2) helps, you also need to install an update (.rtu file) that takes care of driver signing. Beside that, open rivatuner.cfg with a text editor and under the "[GPU_10DE]" section add "600h" for G92.

[GPU_10DE]
NV4 = 20h
NV5 = 28h-2Dh,A0h
NV10 = 100h-103h
NV11 = 110h-113h,1A0h
NV15 = 150h-153h
NV17 = 170h-17Fh,1F0h
NV18 = 180h-18Fh
NV20 = 200h-203h
NV25 = 250h-25Fh
NV28 = 280h-28Fh
NV30 = 300h-30Fh
NV31 = 310h-31Fh
NV34 = 320h-32Fh,FCh
NV35 = 330h-33Fh,FBh,FEh
NV36 = 340h-34Fh,FAh
NV40 = 40h-4Fh,F8h-F9h
NV41 = C0h-CFh,F6h
NV43 = 140h-14Fh,F0h-F4h
NV44 = 160h-16Fh,220h-22Fh
NV46 = 1D0h-1DFh
NV47 = 90h-9Fh,F5h
NV48 = 210h-21Fh
NV49 = 290h-29Fh,2E3h-2E4h
NV4B = 390h-39Fh,2E0h-2E2h
NV50 = 190h-19Fh
G84 = 400h-40Fh
G86 = 420h-42Fh
G92 = 610h-61Fh,600h

That's all I could think of, if someone else has more suggestions feel free to express them.

Yeah driver signing has gone, and I did the cfg hack. No luck.

Aha, got it working, figured out my error, the file I had done was secretley named .cfg.txt

Annoyingly.

If you edit a file using the Windows Notepad with an extension other than .txt, it will always add .txt to the end.
To prevent this, open the Save as dialog when saving and enclose the name in quotes, e.g. "rivatuner.cfg".

Skillz,

Such a simple cfg edit and its given me 1500 3dmarks
