I'm upgrading motherboards later this week and I'm also replacing the default intel heatsink with a Cooler Master Hyper TX2. Should I replace the preapplied thermal paste on the bottom of the TX2? Would I see any improvement using Arctic Silver 5?

The guys over Maximum pc did some test on whether artic silver 5 is actualy any better than what come on the hsf. I think that they came up with some result that the artic silver 5 chilled th cpu around 2-3 degress c more than the generic stuff, so I think you should definently go for it. I would buy their cleaning solution while your at it in order to the thermal greese that came on the hsf off, and the make sure its nice and clean

Can I just use alcohol and paint thinner to take the old off?

No you can use goof off, which is xylene. Then alcohol.

Paint thinner is bad for the CPU I have read. Don't know why but I read it on the internets so it has to be true.

you guys are sad. I try to think back to what I was like when I was a young n00b but in all honesty I don't think I ever was :D Use alcohol to clean it off nothing else!!! And no wisky doesn't count!

I just use isopropyl alcohol to remove thermal paste. The higher the purity, the better.

I use my tongue to lick the paste off. Works great!

I use Alaska TIM to help with removal. With the amount of people that seem to be brain dead around here, it wouldn't surprize me if they did lick it off ;)

It is latex paint remover just like goof off. See if the active ingredient is Xylene. Is it is would say it is the same.

Ok, thanks.

Based on my experience alcohol alone doesn't work worth crap. Unless you're using sandpaper to apply the alcohol. :)

Make sure you use the alcohol to remove the goof off residue before reapplying paste.

man its so easy wipe it off with a paper towel then use 90% to clean it up afterwards. No goo off or strippers or any other chems needed.
