will the 3870 x2 be better than 3870 crossfire? it should be since the card is on a single pci-e slot, instead of having 2 cards each on its own slot (with the addition of needing an x38 to get the most out of them).

Not necessarily. Maybe they have to use mobile or downclocked GPUs on the X2 card due to thermal issues.
