Asus formally splits into three companies.

Asustek's plan to promote and build the Asus brand has always involved splitting the company into three distinct units, and it looks like the company has finally gone ahead and taken that step -- say hello to the new Asus, which only makes Asus-branded computers, Pegatron, which will handle OEM, mobo, and component manufacturing, and Unihan, which will concentrate on casing, modules and other non-PC manufacturing. Pegatron and Unihan are expected to continue the former Asus' manufacturing tasks with little to no dropoff or transition, but there's a nasty little surprise in store for employees of all three new companies: their former pensions have all been cancelled, and the clock started anew as of January 1. No wonder they named these companies after rejected Decepticons.

I've always believed a bigger brand is better. Brand recognition is especially powerful in a loyal PC market.

Like it was said in the initial post, the story about Asus wanting to split has been around for some time.
The part about the pension fund sucks, it's not like the company went bankrupt, they still have the contributions and all the assets. I'm not familiar with Taiwan legislation, but can't they just split the pension fund ?

Searching the web, I found some comments about Taiwan going for "mandatory" state managed pensions back in 2005. Mandatory for employers, the employees had the option of joining or not.

ASUStek is already split to ASUS and AsRock. Similar to Toyota and Lexus.
One brand is for masses, other one is prestige one. Both working separatelly but for the same main company. They're just splitting it even further...

If I get verification on that pension thing, I'll never buy ASUS/pegatron/whatever again. That's heinous.

Yeah, never buying Pega****, a company that does that to their folks doesn't deserve my money. Hell I might burn my P5E in effigy and get a Gigabyte or something.

Pegatron?

:rofl

Its not as wierd as it sounds. According to their corporate history, they got the name "Asus" from "Pegasus". Now they're finally using the first half of the word.

OK, so it is as ridiculous as it sounds...and I don't see myself shelling out $600 for the top-of-the-line Pegatron video card...
