I can either get a nvidia 8600 or i can upgrade my power supply and get a 8800. Is it worth it to upgrade my 300 watt power supply. If so about how much would it cost for a 500 watt power supply.

What are the specs of the rest of your PC? Also, what resolution do you use?

amd athlon 64 x2 dual core 4000+ processor
19 inch lcd monitor
2 gb dual channel ddr2 sdram at 667 mhz
160gb serial ata hard drive 7200 rpm
128 mb geforce 8300gs

Right now i'm using a 1440 x 900 desktop resolution and 1024 x 768 game resolution. My Games will play but i want them to play on high graphics.

I'd go with the PSU + 8800.

I went from 7900GTSLI to 1 8800GTX with an AMD 3800+ and the difference was huge. You should see quite a boost going from a 8300 to a 8800.

yeah but i'm kinda of nervous of getting a new power supply because i want it to hook up to everything currently on my computer. Do you know how much they cost?

I'm thinking the 8800GT 256 would be a good choice, it's around $200-220. You will definitely need a new power supply, 500-600w vary in price, but you'll want a quality brand. OCZ StealthXStream 600w (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341010) is a popular budget choice. You might be able to find other 500 or 550w models a little cheaper, just read reviews on them before buying, and never skimp on the power supply.

how will i know if it has all the connectors on it that i'll need. The specs list the connectors but i'm not sure if they'll match up with my new computer.

if your computer was made within the last 10 years it will work fine.

my old computer only 3 years old used connectors that had individual holes in them. my new computer has cables that are black on the ends and are flatter. so this doesn't matter?

Sounds like you are talking about the white Molex connectors and black SATA power connectors that plug into the optical drives and hard drive. It doesn't matter, any decent new power supply will have all the connectors you need.

yeah okay thanks. i found some 600 watt power supplies for around $60 on tiger direct. do you think i'll need more for a 8800?

600w is fine for an 8800, unless its a from a cheap no-name brand.

will a 8800 with 256 ram run all my games on the highest settings.
Battle for middle earth 1, 2 , rotwk.
Fable lost chapters

halo 1, 2
