View Full Version : Startup privileged apps in Vista idea
At the moment, running applications with admin rights is a pain. The standard way is to flag a app or service as requiring admin rights then click and elevation prompt every time the PC starts. The work around is to launch the app or process via a scheduled event, set to fire on Windows startup.
I thought what might be useful is a tool that you configure once using the work around method (run as scheduled event on windows start), but that tool simply executes all shortcuts in a folder eg. c:\StartupAdmin Since the launcher and the path would be chosen by the user, the security risk is not much greater than normal. The reason to run shortcuts is to allow custom configuration without adding UI to the utility for configuration and storage, it also allows the same programs to be run manually.
The whole point of this exercise would be to run all those pesky utilities like Logitech mouse and keyboard drivers with admin privileges so they work in games, some of which have to run with higher privilege due to PunkBuster or similar requirements.
Thoughts? Perhaps this utility exists already, it would be very simple to write. Perhaps there is a better way?
For anyone who cares, here's a simple low tech solution...
Schedule one login task that runs a batch file with admin privilege. In this .bat file, copy the startup applications from your Start menu and registry \Run locations, deleting the original shortcuts and taking care to copy the parameters. The .bat file should use the Start command to launch each application.
Now you can use your G15 keyboard apps in Vista with games like Battlefield 2and bind extra mouse buttons to key presses / sequences without Vista silently ignoring these privileged operations. Also, adding a new privileged application only takes a few seconds.
why do I get the feeling that it takes you a REALLY long time to tie your shoes....
