Okay, I have a copy of XP Pro... one of the original copies from 2001. The license (key) is the Enterprise edition so it is good for an unlimited amount of installs without phoning for activation.

Okay, here's the problem- I lost the disc. :headexplode:

So, in the worst case scenerio, can I buy a new copy of XP Pro, and just use my Enterprise key, or do I have to use the key that comes with the new copy of XP?

TIA.

it's technically illegal, but if you own the key you could just download the retail disc via torrents.

i mean, you did buy it and you do own the enterprise cd key. any corporate/enterprise retail CD would work.

To answer the question for posterity, a standard XP Pro disk will not use an enterprise license key.

Really? The OS is the same though, isn't it? It's just the key that is different. So if I had lost my disc, I'd have to purchase another? :wtf:

Screw that. :p

He's right there are two keysets for XP Pro, the corporate keys and any others. Not sure if it affects the media you need to use though. Kinda like vista, the install disk is the same, its the keys that differ.

Standard XP Pro requires activation while XP Pro Enterprise does not and that plays a factor in this case. Sytaylor is right, there are two key sets: one for Pro and one for Pro Enterprise. The Enterprise media won't accept keys for Home/Pro (non-enterprise). The XP Pro media shouldn't take enterprise keys based on this, but personally I haven't tried that scenario.

That really does stink. :( So if I lost my disc, could I contact MS and get a replacement then? I mean, wth??? lol This is just crazy!
