This news got me interested in amBX!
7th January 2008 - Redhill, UK – Philips today announced an alliance with Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, to amBX-enable Brothers in Arms Hell’s Highway and Far Cry 2, both due for release in 2008. The agreement will also see an amBX patch being released for the original Far Cry. Further patches for existing Ubisoft games will also be released with the amBX-enabling of additional titles to be announced later.

Sounds pretty interesting. Still not sold on how noticeable it will be...

I'm thinking that it will be very expensive to set up something like that. Nevertheless, I'd like to see where they go with this. Hopefully this isn't something like Ageia's PPU.

I think I read something about this a few years back. It's basically lights you put next to your PC and they change color based on the content of the screen and illuminate the room. Supposed to make it more "immersive". :headexplode:

I would agree. I'm still tempted to get a butt kicker to see what that's like, but I'm not sure if having flashing colors outside of the monitor would make any difference. I'd rather have surround gaming from 3 monitors than flashing lights. The fans might help though.

I have a Phillips TV that supports the Ambilight portion of amBX. It's actually pretty sweet.

The light up speakers though. They look like they'd just in annoying.

lol what a useless tech though.

It took me a while to remember what it is, it IS those colored backlights.

I forget if there's also little fans that can blow in your face or if that's a different tech.

I also remember hearing that some of the first TVs with ambx actually started fires because of the backlights.

I would just wait and try it before you judge it. I mean who would think rumble is such a good feature if they never used it. I did always want to mod a mouse with rumble/feedback support.

edit: ever tried the snow mobile arcade things that blows the cold air in your face. I thought that was pretty cool. Something like that would add to a game for sure.

I consider rumble useless to this day, and I've used it in everything from the Star Fox 64 rumble pack to my 360 and Wii (not my PS3 because I haven't bothered buying a Dual Shock 3, of course).

The ButtKicker is awesome in race and flight sims. And it's cool for movies too. I think it's cheap for what you get.

It's actually better than you think. Imagine the caves in Oblivion. It's all dark but as you approach a camp fire your whole surrounding lights up amber yellow. Very immersive.

I suppose if you play your PC in the dark. :|

I'm unconvinced... I'd have to see it in QolfWest to make a decision about it.

I tried it with Wolf Quest. My elk hunting times went way down. I can kill a ****ing elk in 6 seconds flat. Used to take me 20 seconds.

Damn. Reading the amBx page I started to think someone was actually making a worth-while force feedback standard. Then I realized they are just using those stupid lights and their own proprietary crap.

I guess I'll have to continue saying "someone needs to make a general force feedback and "immersion" standard for multimedia devices" every time some cool new device (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=1483308&highlight=force+feedback#post1483308) comes out that won't last a week.

This is probably as close as anyone has gotten though.

Looks cool, but it needs more gaming support to be worth the price

OK, I wondered if the fans were a component, might be nice for racing games sometimes.

The video there of the actual gameplay shows a few bad things. The lights response time seems a little slow, it would be distracting. Also, the monitor that guy was using was way too small and far away, I'd be noticing those lights soo much.

Finally, can you not use your own speakers with the ambx? If so, that's really lame, because their speakers probably aren't that great.
