View Full Version : Vista 32 and 4 GB Ram

I have Vista Home Premium 32 installed with 4x1 mb of ram. My processor is a Core Duo 6750 and my video card is a XFX 8800 GT OC 512.
Bios and CPUID acknowledge that I have 4 GB of ram but Vista reports only 3.24 GB. I have read a lot of articles after doing a Google search with various tweaks and commands to be loaded through elevated command prompts, but most of the information is contradictory. It seems that Vista 32 maps memory for certain hardware, such as the graphics card, making it unavailable for general use.
Is there a real answer besides switching to Vista 64? Am I getting full use of my 4 gb of memory despite what Vista reports?
I'm affraid not buddy. 32bit just doesn't have enough I/O's to allow full use of your memory. 64bit is the way to go.

QFT. I had 32bit for a while, and then I went to 4 gigs, and I was limited by the o/s. Once I moved to Vista 64bit, I'm running silky smooth. ;)

I have a 4GB kit in mine, XP uses 3.25GB but when I boot to Vista 4GB is used. To be honest I'd rather run XP and 3.25GB than Vista x64 with all 4GB being seen and so improperly handled :) Nothing like popping in 8GB and watching Vista use every lsat drop, so much that when I ran an app or clicked the start menu it would hesitate as it released all that cached memory. I decided Vista x64 will never be able to actually properly use it and sold the other 4GB kit. I certainly don't need the bloated OS to cache all it's crap I never use. What a waste.

Acctually its supposed to use as much as it needs to run smooth... because guess what... when you load a game, the game takes priority of the memory and takes what it needs! In all honesty... if you are only using say 20% or less of your ram with your OS sitting there... you are just waiting your memory.. why not allow the OS to use it when nothing else needs it? *sigh*. Anyway.... I just switch to 64-bit Vista myself.... runs smooth as butter with 4GB.... and I used 4GB on Vista 32-bit.... and it only saw 2.93GB for myself but it ran just fine. I don;t notice any performance difference with 64-bit... but it is nice to know all my memory CAN be used if NEED be :)

Do not waste your time arguing with this toolbag  He is without a doubt the biggest moron on the face of this planet when it comes to anything Vista related and is also known for spreading nothing but fud.
I am also on Vista 64 with 4gbs of ram myself and would never even think about going back to XP. I just laugh my ass off a what a tool conroejoe is.

haha so how much does it cost for Bill Gates to own and anally rape you every night? My guess is that it would cost 1 copy of Vista for him to have his way with your stupid a$s.
Damn near every website on the internet has said Vista is the biggest failure (some use the term disappointment) of the year, yet idiots like you will argue like Vista is your own mother.

The problem is - that yes it frees the memory but you have to wait for that to happen. I don't want windows caching every last file just to "use" my ram. I prefer my ram to be used by applications and games NOT the bloated OS. Vista does not feel snappy if you have a clean install of XP, alot of people here have gone back and they always mention how much snappier XP now feels... well guess what?? Thats why.
Even if I was using 8% of my ram the moment I launch a game like Crysis or BF2 I'm now using most of the 4GB. I don't care if my memory isn't being used to 100% 24/7. I just want it used when I run an app or game. The rest of the time, no, I don't care that it's not being used.
Some of you guys here are so damn thick and not in a good way.

ROTFLMAO! not once have I ever and I do mean EVAR! had to wait for the memory to free itself as it does it so fast I dont even notice it. You make it sound as though there is some type of a noticeable pause as you open a new app or game...ROTF!
If you are having to literally wait on the memory to free itself then maybe you should stay away from Vista because you obviously do not know wtf you are doing.
Also I hope you do realize that you can disable the memory cache feature in Vista if you do not like it :retard:

Oh I stay away it's on my other HD, not been booted since I put SP1 on it and used it with SP1 for a week. Network transfers still sucked, games were still not as fast as XP. I don't have a problem staying away. I just love it when someone does go back and then can't say enough about how much slower Vista was and how they never noticed it until they went back.

Whatever dude, you still payed something for it. I got the OEM Vista 64 bit premium edition myself for something like $90.00 off of the Egg.
Totally worth it.

Fortunately, I kept all of the paperwork that came in my box when I bought Vista Home Premium 32. One was a card with information on how to purchase a 64 bit DVD for the same license for only a handling charge of $10. Obviously, I will have to remove the 32 bit since only one will activate and validate. This was for the Upgrade version of Home Premium. Two minutes on line and a two week wait. (1 week if you want to pay extra). Pretty good deal!
Vista is a huge step in the right direction! It is visually pleasing (Very important!) and has much greater support for external devices so I don't have to go trolling around for drivers left and right. Its 64bit build is also far superior to that of XP's which hasn't seen the Microsoft love that Vista's version has. Then theres the DX10 feature that will make a difference once its used properly :p All these Vista hatters need to go crawl under a rock!
it was the same way when XP was released every one said it was junk they complained about its caching of files as well and the indexing service every one threw a fit. Now look at how things are there all pro XP and anti Vista :retard: I think you should all grab a copy of windows NT and shove it up your ass!
