For the first time since 1982, the NBA is sending two teams back to the court for a do-over.
The Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat must replay the final 51.9 seconds of their game last month because the official scorer ruled incorrectly that Shaquille O'Neal fouled out, the league said Friday.
The Hawks won 117-111 at home in overtime Dec. 19, but strike that one from the books. For now, playoff-contending Atlanta has one less win, while the Heat have one less loss on their hapless record.
"We're human. We make mistakes," Hawks owner Michael Gearon Jr. said. "There certainly wasn't anything malicious about it. We have one of the most senior scoring staffs in the league. They're good. It happened. There's not much we can do about it."
Making it a truly miserable day: Atlanta followed up NBA commissioner David Stern's decision by losing to Washington 102-98 in overtime.
The NBA said the replay will be held before Miami's next visit to Atlanta on March 8. Play will start from the time after O'Neal's disputed sixth foul, with the Hawks leading 114-111.
This the teh gay... IS NOTHING SACRED? The game is OVER! :headexplode: :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn:

It definitely seems to be kind of pointless. It probably costs a ton of money just to get the two teams together for 1 minute of play. Does it also mean that anyone who attended the other game gets free admission? I can't imagine many people would come to watch 1 minute of basketball.
That's really really asinine...
There is not much to it really. They meet again so the "do-over" will be right before or after that scheduled game.
That's really really asinine...

Why don't they do it for every sport? Oh yea, because NBA has been on the decline for years.

I'm a die hard NBA fan, but even I think this is rediculous.
Will have to believe it when I see it.

Basketball is the most entertaining sport in the world and the most competitive. If anything, the NBA has been on an INCLINE the past few years. Unlike football, you NEVER really know who will win. Thats the beauty of the game. Even the underdog can do well.
But I guess watching the Patriots beat every team 42 to 7 is much more exciting.

I've heard it on ESPN... I think it's true. It's an absolute joke. I'm an NBA fan too and it makes the league a joke.

If this is true, the Hawks will STILL win. More than likely Shaq will be injured anyway, so why the hell does it matter?
Heat = worst team in the NBA(other than Minnesota)
Gotta love having a largely WORTHLESS and OVERPAID player to bring down an entire team. If Shaq was not on the Heat, they would be doing a hell of a lot better as they would have a much much much larger salary cap.

True, Shaq is a terrible drain on the Heat, with almost no upside.
The Hawks will still win, but the fact that they are doing the game over matters for the league's little remaining credibility.

You never know who will win in football either. Look at the Chargers upset of the Colts and the Cowboys were favored over the Giants also. Go ahead and point at the Patriots, I will just point at the 90s Bulls.

Why not just point at this year's Boston Celtics? They have had a BETTER record than any NBA team in HISTORY(even better than the "90's Bulls"). Oh yea, thats right. They just recently lost against 2 of the worst teams in the NBA. Thats right. Thats right.
Football is pretty damn easy to pick out who will win most of the time. Sure upsets do happen, but they are few and far between. Upsets in the NBA are just part of the game. For god sakes Charlotte CREAMED the Pistons this weekend. The Pistons are one of the best teams in the NBA and Charlotte is one of the worst!
Did we forget who made it to the NBA Finals last year? The Cavaliers? What the hell. They barely deserved to make the first round of the playoffs, much less the finals!
NBA Basketball is the most exciting sport on TV. Period.

NHL ? Isn't that like, "National Highschool League"? I didn't even know NHL played on TV? :wtf: Maybe its more popular in a less relevant country... like Canada.
You also forgot MLB. Major Leaders in Boredom.
:D
NFL isn't bad, its just 95% of the games are predictable on who is going to win. I still watch NFL all the time even though that fact remains true. Its certainly not a boring sport.

No comeback needed if you live in Michigan. We still have a pretty sweet team. :D
The biggest problem I have with basketball is all of the fouls. If one player even touches another player their getting a free throw.

I have to say, with all the new modifications to the rules over the past few years, I agree.
What I don't understand however is it seems all the teams in the NBA are affected very much by these foul rules.... except for the San Antonio Spurs. Those guys still play dirty as hell and NEVER get called fouls. Bruce Bowen hits anyone near him. No foul. Finley talks more trash than anyone in the NBA. No foul. Horry beats the hell out of anyone near him. No foul. And then to top it all off. Ginobli, in all his homorific glory, cries like a school girl princess anyone as much as blows on him. Foul ALWAYS called.... except for its always on the other team. The only classy player on the Spurs is Tim Duncan. Even he does a lot of shady stuff when big games come around(like over dramatizing when someone schools him, by falling for an offensive foul called on the other team).
Spurs = :thumbdwn:

You call the competition great in the NBA, yet only how many teams have won championships since 1991?
Bulls - 6
Rockets -2
Spurs - 4
Lakers - 3
Heat - 1
Pistons - 1
Let's look at the NFL since 1991
Redskins - 1
Cowboys - 3
49ers - 1
Patriots - 3
Rams - 1
Bucs - 1
Ravens - 1
Steelers - 1
Packers - 1
Broncos - 2
Colts - 1
Hmmm...

I will say though, that the Steelers winning the super bowl was quite a surprise. I'll give you that :).

I didn't get to read what you deleted, but in your defense the NBA playoffs aren't single elimination like the NFL, which generally allows the superior team to overcome any flukes. Still, I don't think the NBA is on the same level of parity as other leagues. It might be on par with Major League Baseball, but the lack of a salary cap is to blame for the MLB's predictability.

Thank god for salary cap in NFL.
