So you are saying VC-1 is superior to AVC? Please show me where this is true, because I look at PoTC and those movies look amazing, and then I look at House of 1000 Corpses and it looks amazing also... so... what is the problem? Or are you just regurgitating what Amir says?

you're back a little early for it being a saturday night, no encore at the celtic tiger (http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/d/da/350px-M_flatley_celtictiger_360.jpg) tonight? or did you fap a little sooner than expected so you left the show before it ended

AVC ( due to filtering in the compression) has a softer look and appearance then VC-1.

well youre being a douchebag for ****ting on his thread. at least be pleasant to the guy, he's just trying to throw some facts out.

But he isn't just trying to throw some facts out, otherwise he wouldn't have called it a "in depth analysis".

Sony has a BD-ROM drive coming Feb 11th for $200. Pre-order is already up on Amazon. I thought about getting this for my HTPC.

I've seen POTC. It looks more blurry than other movies like King Kong (vc-1 I believe).

In King Kong, the clarity just jumps out at you.,

Why? If HD-DVD goes down the crapper, why waste an extra $100 on the combo drive? It's not like I'm going to buy it when it first comes out, it'll be later this year when I get the opportunity. I'd like to see other people's impressions on it first. ;)

Also combo drives might not have much support (in terms of upgrading the blu-ray **** that is... to 2.0)

Seriously I can't see how I was. At first I was pointing out that he left out some of the numbers on the websites he used (and I expected he'd not want to miss this since it's an "indepth analysis") and secondly I just pointed that I wouldn't consider this an indepth analysis, even added in a smiley so I couldn't be misunderstood. Well apparently I could anyway. I guess I may never know what exactly pulls your triggers..

I generally agree with him with regards to general rushed encodes you find scattered online that are suppose to be "Demo's" of the codec, but for movie use done professionally by the studios, I find it hard to judge tbh.

I've seen all three of HDM codecs in action, and the only one that truly stands out is MPEG2 for being rediculously poor. (Most of the time)

I agree Mpeg2 sucks when not given enough space... but Crank and even Kung Fu Hustle (to a lesser degree) still look pretty awesome (especially Crank which looks freaking amazing). I am not saying "GIMME MPEG2 4 EVA!", but I don't mind it on some titles so long as I get the same PQ for the most part.

Most online reviewers and really hifi savy people find MPEG4 AVC slightly superior to VC-1. If anybody wants a link or two I can try and dig them up but I consider this more common knowledge.

Just aslong as all future releases have it, then great.

Takes the piss paying £18 for a movie when they won't even use the best codecs available.

On a side note, does anyone know if 30 Days of Night is likely to be region free?

MPEG4 AVC and VC-1 are virtually the same thing at the bitrates they use on Blu-Ray and HD DVD. Given the same care, there will be no difference between the two. Some editors, such as the inept Dan Ramer of DVDFILE, have made erroneous conclusions on codecs based on completely different movies and genres; comparing the average video review scores of movies like Liar Liar, Daylight, and The Jerk to Pirates of the Carribean and Meet the Robinsons - then blaming the disparity on the codec instead of the master. Pretty laughable stuff, I would pay them no mind. Then of course enthusiasts on various websites who are anti-MS will preach AVC night and day because of their hatred for Microsoft; again, pay them no mind - we are not comparing companies, we are comparing codecs and encoders.

At very low (i.e. 56k modem) bitrates, though, MPEG4 AVC may have an advantage. But that is irrelevant in this discussion.

Another thing to consider is that the Microsoft professional VC-1 encoder is awesome, but it is the only VC-1 encoder that exists so there isn't much choice. There are various AVC encoders and some of them are worse than others. Only a select few come close to the MS VC-1 encoder.
