Device Drivers, X and Debian Distro

Hi All.

I am very much a newbie to Linux. I've a Debian 3.0 distro CD and have successfully installed Linux. However, startx results in a fatal error for the X Server. I receive the following message back:

"Fatal Server Error: No Screens Found"

I am running a Creative Labs CT6870 Graphics Card with NVidia's Riva TNT2 Chipset.

Anyone have any ideas as to what I should do to remediate this?

Hi Andy.

Attached pls find the XF86Config-4 file and the FAILLOG (there is no XFree86.0.log file in the /var/log directory of my Debian 3.0 Woody Install.

The video card is a Creative Labs CT6870
The Driver included in the Debian X Setup is 'nv'
The Distribution is Debian 3.0 Woody
As I can't get X to run, I can't tell you the video bios version
The processor is a Pentium II 233 Mhz MMX
The motherboard version is unknown

Actually, I just had to crash the system and bring it back up. The system attempted to boot with x, failed, and created the attached log. Any ideas on what I should do from here?

You should probably try installing the accelerated drivers. You can grab them from http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_ia32_1.0-4349 - offhand, i'd imagine the reason you can't start with the "nv" driver is your hsync range is so small - 28-33 is not large at all, and it's possible that you're just not validating any modes. You should find the correct values for your monitor and plug them in - your monitor's manufacturer should probably provide them on their website.
