Here in Canada, XBox360 points are sold in either 1400 or 2800 point denominations for $20 and $40 respectively. However, in looking for a better deal in ebay.com, I see denominations of 1600 or 4000 points.

Are the 1600 or 4000 points valid for a United States XBox360 Live account only?

Oh and by the way, my third console just died via three rings of red light. Onward to my fourth!

No, Microsoft Points for the XBox360 are not universal. Point cards sold in Canada are valid only for Canadian accounts. So in the United States, 1600 and 4000 point cards are only valid for United States accounts and 1400 and 2800 point cards are only valid for Canadian accounts.

Cards sold for different places in the EU, are only valid in the place specified.

Yes, it sucks that the Canada points cards are overpriced.
Yes, it sucks that the hardware is pretty unreliable (but it is getting better).
Yes, MS warranty service is actually pretty good (least here in Canada).

I can only speak from my first hand experience.

Cards I purchase here in Italy are good for any European account (I keep an UK account as default) but not for a US or Japanese one.

I suppose that's the same for the other regions as well.
