After much debate and fighting with Windows Vista x64 and NVIDIA drivers I decided to go back to Windows XP Pro x64 SP2 So far it's been much smoother and stable compared to Windows Vista X64 Infact, I'll wait for a Windows Vista SP2 before I ever jump back on to Vista again. XP does just about anything Vista can do other then DirectX 10 and maybe some security features. Now all I'll need is some vista skins! lol Man, thank goodness!

I did this too. For me it came down to resources; my laptop's 100GB hard drive was getting cramped, and Vista's ~15GB install wasn't helping any. I have also been fooling with virtualization lately, and that requires RAM. Even with 2GB RAM, Vista chewed up a third of that which meant one less VM I could comfortably run.

I'm on XP64 now on my laptop and it runs great.

Oh, my system can chew up vista no problem.... It's the software that sucks ass!!!! I have SLI and Vista x64 is well for he most part broken with SLI and x64-Bit. XP on the other hand is solid! So now I'll stick it out with my setup on XP and hold off until Vista is primed with a SP2!

Depends on how well gaming goes with SLI on XP x64! (nana2)

WinXP X64 is so much better in SLI compared to Vista x64. I just got done playing about an hours worth of UT3 and I could feel the increase in performance.

The only problem I had in XP x64 was the sound driver for my Auzentech Mystique. Running the standard install the XP x64 driver wouldn't install properly and I had no SPDIF.

I install the drivers in the Vista folder and guess what - worked like a charm. Driver and control panel from the Vista driver worked in XP x64!! and they claim the driver model is so different, I call BS.

Only question i have is will the SP3 for XP fi the dual core bugs plaguing AMD 64 bit dual cores withought doing registry tweaks?

I tried Vista 32 and 64 on my GF's machine this weekend, but ended up settling on XP MCE again. There was no 64 bit driver for one of her TV Tuners and there was no easy way to migrate her XP profile to Vista on a fresh install. Also, I can't believe drive to drive file transfers are still SO slow even with RDC turned off and the "Fix slow copy" hotfix (and many other hotfixes) installed. I really liked how fast Teracopy behaved, BUT it has problems when copying to some protected folders, even with UAC turned off. It either crashes or skips the files.

I'm just not impressed with Vista quite yet for this application. It's doing well for my HTPC, but I couldn't use it for general desktop productivity.

Thats what alot of people are using it for,"HTPC".

I agree that productivity is favoring XP still but will change.

Back to XP x64 I mean. I want to be on Vista x64 but SLI is for the most part broken for SLI on Vista x64 so it will be awhile and NVIDIA needs better drivers for my setup so I'll ride it out on XP x64 for 90 or more days.... :D
If service pack 1 is all that and more then I know I'll go back. I like Vista but they released it way to soon.

windows xp is the best operating system for gaming, dx10 right now is nothing. Crysis is the only game that matters and all you need is a few tweaks to get them.

I feel ya man. I'm back on Windows XP x64 today. I got all my drivers ready and go, and some basic software i need.

My 3DMark06 jumped up for 1000 points. I installed Crysis and i can play it now!!!!. I can't believe what the **** i was missing for the last 2 months and this setup.

Vista blows :thumbdwn:

Windows XP x64 is so much quicker and responsive...no ****ing slugish experience...
I'm not going back to Vista no matter what they do to it. I can't stand it anymore. Since, Windows 7 is due to 2009...i will wait for next Windows release.

I have both and Vista x64 is pretty much worthless to me. The fact that Vista bogs you down in DRM means that essentially you can't do custom resolutions on TV out with Nvidia unless your TV acts like a monitor and returns valid EDID information. Mine doesn't and so XP all the way for me. XP x64 is very stable being a derivative of 2003 and much harder to take down than Vista. Frankly I'm going Linux w/ Compiz Fusion as soon as I can work out how do custom TV out resolutions. Compiz and Linux make a lot of sense for a media playback/entertainment PC.

I don't mind Vista x64 (I have it on a spare partition), and in general it's been pretty damn well-behaved for me, but XP/x64 is by default more lightweight and thus a little zippier. I'm willing to forego pretty for zippy, in a nutshell...you'd think it wouldn't be an issue with a quad-core, but noooo...

LMAO. I expect to see more of these posts as people go back to XP and realize how much faster it really is. Vista isn't bad until you realize how much better / faster XP is.

The funniest thing of all are the ones who cry that Vista is progress.

It may be newer, but it is in no way progress. It is in fact a new money maker for MS. New product = new revenues, duh.

I agree. Vista was released so MS could bring in some revenue. I think they knew it was garbage when they released it.

There is a video of Bill Gates basically saying Vista wasn't done.

I thought it was pretty cool that he was straight about it. I'm sure that took balls, but calling a spade a spade isn't too hard.

I really really gave a chance to Vista. I'm fighting with for almost a year now and i simply couldn't do it anymore. I reverted Uncle's PC from Vista to XP 64bit Edition a few days ago. He is so happy, he told me he enjoys playing Crysis and other games. He doesn't know a lot about computers but the way he described the difference between Vista and Xp was like...i feel like nothing is choking my computer now, it can breathe finally.

He has no bad machine by any means. Dual core AM2 6000+ with 4GB of DDR2 and ATI Radeon X2900XT card.

lol

I've never had a problem with Vista except for SLI support.

They always talk about Superfetch and other features which supposed to speed up the things. That's all bull****. Vista can't even come close to XP as far as time needed to execute app or game. After using Vista for almost a year, and now going back to XP...it's like freaking upgrade. Everything runs and goes faster.

I really wont accept the argument saying...it was like with Windows 98 which was faster then XP cause of hardware. I was running Vista on hardware which is far far above the recommended requirements for it.

Quad + 4GB + SLI Video Cards + Raid 0 HDD config.

After a year it comes to the fact that Vista is total blow, and it doesn't use your hardware right. Just the fact that they will replace Vista in 2009 tells me enough. Vista will have destiny of Windows ME. Most companies wont adapt Vista this year, so they will probably decide to go to Windows 7 in 2009 and i think Windows 7 will kick ass.

I really wont miss DirectX 10 cause it wont benefits gamers, not even in 2008. All the upcoming titles in 2008 are for the most part DirectX 9 based games.
Also sound support in Vista sucks, my Xi-Fi sounds as supposed to now back in XP.

Too bad i spend money on Full Retail Ultimate X64 Copy, and OEM Business X86 copy. What a wasted money...
