one con i heard was that you would not be able to operate windows update. is that true? are there any others?
You would be a thief :thumbdwn:
Just buy the OEM version. It's only about £50 for Vista Premium 64. Don't be a cheap ass.

I don't know, I only use a legal OEM version of Vista Ultimate
with all versions you cannot get updates. and with the ultimate version, you cannot use Aero.

Wrong..... and wrong again . Not that I'm encouraging (lee) , but I know for a FACT that you are wrong on both counts !!
( And don't ask how I KNOW:captnkill: )
If your copy of Vista is detected as non genuine I think it locks you down to just internet explorer.
I had my copy freak out on me one time and it did that. When I tried to pick activate by phone where all the numbers should've been it was gibberish. Needless to say I had to reformat.

To put it simply, the only real con is that it's not legit...that's it. You can still get updates and all that.

There are ways around this.

The con is the loss from piracy is factored into the price so honest people get burned.

I hope one day they have another solution to this
I use a OEM version but theres a person at work who said he is using some sort of OEM dell pre-avtivated verstion of vista x32 ... he said he gets every single thing i get! .... i went to look at his system becaues i found it hard to belive ... hes right ... he has the very latest v744 service pack installed and every update that i have .... his system is no different in anyway to mine, he has Aero, dreamScene, the extra games, the lot! .... hes even manages to fine a tool that removed the dell branding...... he told me he just wanted to test the full version and hes gonna buy a OEM version very soon.

Uses a boot loader to make the OS think it's a Dell. It looks 100% genuine to windows update, even the add on stuff. There is even a x86 and x64 version of it. I know a few guys using it. SP1 is supposed to address this and the timestop cracks.

uhm, non-genuine windows means if you visit a webpage without the latest security updates, you can a virus with not even knowing it
honestly, get a genuine copy so people who have webpages don't have to deal with mass amounts of botnets - and so you don't have a virus

he is talking about if you download an ISO online and use a CD key that has already been used.
he is not asking what can be done with cracks and workarounds. and in that respect, i know that i am right because i did it with Vista RTM to try it out (before i got my copy through the school).
your piracy does not impress me. neither does the fact that you did it by being a script/warez kiddie. :|

eh... he is probably talking about the method where one modifies the ACPI table on a bios to add the SLIC. Similar to bios emulation thru a bootloader but instead of using a bootloader that can be detected easier one just flashes a new bios with the new SLIC.
Personally I hope that anyone trying this bricks their motherboard with a bad flash.
Vista activates completely and you have access to all the updates and extras with full functionality... that is until SP1 hits and then all these pirates are screwwed.
Its already been reported that current versions of SP1 floating around already enable some countermeasures against these two methods so it shouldn't be long.

SP-1 may stop hackers for a very short time. Then they have it hacked again. It will never stop.

While this is true, there comes a point where the work required to keep up with MS becomes too much. I mean yeah you can flash your firmware with something some dude on an IRC channel GUARANTEES won't fry your motherboard and run Vista all cheatery, but who's to say MS won't break that next month?
If you intend to use Vista, and you intend to keep up to date and have the support and usability to be productive, and not have to keep hacking it to keep it propped up and somewhat working, just buy the freakin' thing. Mow some lawns, shovel some snow, sell Girl Scout cookies, whatever. Home Premium doesn't cost all that much. Heck, rage against the machine and try to get a cheap license with a key. They sell such things on Pricewatch and Google products.
Or.. use a free OS like Linux. then you don't need to worry about validation *and* you don't need to mow lawns.

seriously, if someone pirates vista they're a :retard:
they deserve all the nvdllmkm errors and instability that come with the OS..why would you leave a fine OS like XP for an unstable os that is still in its beta stage? :rofl
