The least expensive solution – Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX – is projected to be released in late February or early March and is claimed to be based on one GPU. The new model 9800 GTX will replace existing GeForce 8800 GTX, thus, should offer performance on par with GeForce 8800 Ultra and support 3-way SLI configuration. In addition, there will be a the least expensive version of GeForce 9-series called GeForce 9800 GT and due in March or April.

Based on information reported earlier, Nvidia GeForce 9800-series graphics processors will support DirectX 10.1 feature-set along with powerful video encoding engine and post-processor.

Even though the new GeForce 9800 GX2 is projected to offer performance only 30% higher compared to Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra, whereas the new GeForce 9800 GTX should outperform the 8800 GTX by a similar margin, the new lineup represents a great threat to ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2.

These will hopefully be out by the last week of my step up. I'm betting that 9800GT will fill the usual price/performance sweet spot.

I will not be getting a 9800 GTX if it does not significantly up the ante on performance especially on Crysis at 1920 by 1200 with 4X AA and 8X AF by at least 200%. Currently I am getting 23-25 fps! Ie 60 fps or nothing!!!

That will be my benchmark before I pull the trigger

I'm afraid you have to wait for the G100 if thats what you want :o .. heck even the G100 might not reach that mark.

I will wait patiently though. We should soon start seeing more or less confirmed details on the web soon since the 3800 X2 have plopping out

Guys like me with a single 8800GTS 640 will see a pretty good increase for the cost of a step up, but what are you running now MUYA? I'll be happy with a 100% increase myself, but I'm running 1680x1050 also.

I thought this "9800 GTX" never amounted to anything. I was under the impression that we were just going to get a 9600GT and a 9800GX2 atleast until summer sometime when the next gen chip is released.

Dont worry if the news are true , the 9800GTX will be "nothing" but a slightly overclocked GTX/U.

OMG!!! Nvidia is toying with us! They're just stepping up each time AMD releases something new. It's pathetic! :thumbdwn:

Yeah, I see your point. I'd prefer the 19x12 too, @ 60FPS. :p

Hmm... disappointing.

I'll be putting my second GTS back in this computer by this week's end hopefully. My next build is gonna' rock dual 3870X2's if the price and performance are right... see no reason to invest in anything 9-series from nVidia. Looks like I'll be skipping this generation.

What the hell is nVidia doing?. If a card is named 9800GTX it can't perform the same than 8800GTX!!!. And the GX2 is a damn joke, and expensive as hell I'm sure

Same here. I was looking forward to an upgrade, not worth it though.

This is what happens when ATI has nothing to challenge them with. They get lazy, they become ****y. And consumers suffer from it.

Still reckon I will pick one up. But I really hope these are just rumours and NV offers something better.

We may all yet be surprised from NV's new offerings. It doesn't make sense to offer new products with the same performance level

I can't see the point of replacing the 8800GTX with a another GTX card of similar power. The GTS512 has already done that anyhow. I'm still pretty sure the 'propper' GTX replacement will kick ass. The question is when will it be released?

As for it being bad for ATI, the X2 is gonna piss all over the GX2 from the benchies i've seen. They just need to get it running a bit better for games like Lost Planet, etc.

I think in the short term the X2 might be the way to go. I'll be getting one as long as they improve the drivers. It would be my first ATI card.

I dunno which you are referring too? Because none of them compare the supposed 9800 GX2 just yet.

The 3800 X2 is far better in one game benched by far Call of Juarez but others, it is still close lead over the 8800 GT Sli setup. Not by a whopping margin though.

I'm just going by them saying it'll be 30% faster than the ultra. I must be remembering wrong. I though the X2 was a fair bit ahead of the Ultra. I ought to have a look really...

EDIT: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=105911&page=3

17414 marks at 1280 x 1024 is a damn good score. My SLI'd GT's got about 15500 but that was with a 2 core CPU. So this X2 is about the same as SLI'd GT's. Which is alot faster than the Ultra. As a rule ATI loose less points as the res. goes up, too.

Oh lord.... This is turning almost criminal...

I refuse to be cheated and nvidia are making a very stupid mistake. For the first time in a while I am actually prepared to spend a lot to get the top end card when it's in it's prime. No way am I being tricked into this...

All I can hope for now is that ATI has a low (very low) price on the 3870X2. At least then I can buy two for CF. Even the X2 isnt that impressive tbh...

Criminal! Just criminal...
