Okay, I installed Linux again today after being put off several months ago by not being able to get this to work. I can operate in the Linux command prompt but when I type 'startx' I get an error saying 'no screens found'.
So I went to www.nvidia.com and clicked the 'Download Drivers' button. In Step 1, I chose 'Graphics Driver', and in Step 2, 'GeForce and TNT'. Now in Step 3, where you must pick the operating system, I'm not quite sure which to pick, so I sort of guessed. The Linux options are:
Linux IA32
Linux AMD64
Linux IA64
FreeBSD
I'm not sure which is right for my system, so I guessed 'Linux AMD64'. I'm using RedHat Linux 7.1, by the way.
So I downloaded the NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4180.tar.gz and NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4180.tar.gz files, and put them on a CD (I'm using Win98 at this point). I then boot Linux and copy them to /home/dls and use tar xvzf [file] to extract them both successfully.
Then NVIDIA's instructions say to go into the directory that was created by each and run the command: make install. I do this and get errors:
install: cannot create regular file '//usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/drivers': No such file or directory
make: *** [install] Error 1
Why won't these files install correctly?
Once that succeeds, I'm supposed to change a couple things in my XF86Config-4 file, then reboot and it should work.
