thats not a fix, is a workaround. if they would fix it, then there would be no need for any special 3rd party tools.

Whatever it is, it works. I just wish Vista had a workaround as well for this. games run real choppy at 60hz.

The first google result is:

Re: NetworkThrottlingIndex - Does not fix poor network performance ... (http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2579294&SiteID=17&pageid=0)

As it turns out, some people do have success with the tweak.

But come the **** on, if its that simple just push a WU, Microsoft.

look at the post date, it was December 11th, thats the 668 build, not the final build of SP1, its really fixed in final build

changed the option on all machines, defualt was 10

and i was getting 10-20mb/s over gigabit, changed the option to 3, and after reboot of both machines, gigabit slowed down to 1-3mb/s

changed the setting to 100, and rebooted again, and speed was 60mb/s

I'm not going to bother until SP1 goes RTM at this point. I'm tired of removing SPs and then trying to get Windows update to give me all the patches to install the SP. Just too much work for the results I get. I'll wait till there is a standalone that is RTM before I play with Vista anymore.

I'm going to have to try this once I get an SP1 ISO to deploy.

rumor is that all iso (vista sp1, server 2008) are all done, just waiting for release.

Well I disabled the Vista firewall, it still cannot see the network half the time.

Got a new mouse the other day, Razer Lachesis, wont see it on reboots. Works flawlessly in XP on same machine. Another Vista only problem.

The 'to fix' list just keeps growing.

Enough is enough, I'm wiping the drive and installing Xp x64 again on it. I'm done with Vista altogther.

Thats the problem - as long as I run XP x86 or XP x64 I have ZERO problems. I had two HDs, one runs some variation of XP the other till now some variation of Vista. I have tried installing Vista on both HDs - so it's not the HD. But Vista just doesn't work right for me. The Lachesis needs to be unplugged and replugged for Vista to see it. In XP it comes up ready to go.

And all the network issues, Vista cannot see my network most the time, again in XP I have ZERO issues.

I wish I knew what specifically it was. But since my configuration is always changing I've used Vista with an E6400, E6420, Q6600, Gigabyte DS3 (2), Gigabyte DS3R, OCZ Reaper 6400, Mushkin 6400, Corsair Dominator 8500, etc the hardware that I've used with Vista is pretty endless.

I have ZERO problems with anything in XP these issues are specific to Vista x64 (since I havent run x86 since it was RC). So either Vista just doesnt like my hardware or its just Vista.

I am going to try one last thing. Since my copy was acquired through the school means, I'm going to try my buddies retail copy that he doesn't use and see if I have the same issues with an installation of a retail copy.

Ok -
Well I've reinstalled Vista x64 from a retail DVD, updated to SP1 refresh 2 (RTM). I've still got network issues with it falling off my network. I found a workaround which proves it's a Vista problem. If I disable and then re-enable Network Discovery it will be able to see the other PCs. No reboot of router, switch or anything else. There is some problem with Network Discovery in Vista. Its setup as a home in the network options and Firewall is disabled already. Tried with firewall on, same result.

Razer mouse works fine now.

Restarts take ~5-6 minutes (HD thrashes for a bit while screen shows "Shutting Down". Shutdown and cold starts are fast.
