So I can step up from an 8800gt to a 8800gts 512 for just about $10 or so, or wait and see if the step-up time frame will still be relevant for a new card.

What would you do? :)

I wouldent bother stepping up to a gts ... they are not that big of a step-up and i reckon you would hardly notice a big difference...... personally i would wait for a new card.

I was remembering how my 7950gx2 performed worse than my 7900gtx I had before it in some 3d programs I use that don't use SLI, so I may just go with the 8800gts or something.

We *should* have some reasonably decent benchies and release dates within the next 2-3 weeks if the Feb/March rumors are true. I'm holding off til the last minute.

if the 9800GX2 really is just two 9600GTs in SLI then step-up to the GTS

Performance-wise, there is no good reason to step up to the gts.
The only reason would be the much better fan.

The gx2 has two g92 gt chips on one card and thus is pretty much the same as two gt in sli mode: same power consumption, same heat and noise generated, and only a performance increase in games that support sli.
Decide yourself if you can live with that.

Dual 9600's in SLI mode? O lord! Won't that cost 600+ tacos? :thumbdwn:

Depends on where you buy your tacos :D

Although, I have yet to see a single retailer who accepts tacos as payment - especially in such high amounts as 600, which spoil much faster than you can eat them.
