Here's a good review, it's got all the #'s for current games and Hardware configs. Take a good long look at the Tri SLi, and the 8800GT SLi as well as both the HD 3870 Crossfire results and the 3870X2 numbers.

Two GTs still look like the best choice for folks that don't want to spend 800usd on a setup. Soon that will be a single GX2. I wouldn't buy Ultras myself, and would get the cheapest GTXs I could find and OC them if I was intent on pushing a 2560x monitor with heavy filtering. Personally I wouldn't invest in Tri-SLi and to each their own on that.
You can get an Evga GTX for 359usd with rebate @ Newegg now.

They have great support, and a lifetime warranty that isn't voided by overclocking or replacing the HSF. If you've got a GTX already and want a 2560x monitor, that's a tempting offer.
Prices on 780i have fallen so they're really no more expensive than X38. If you really didn't want to invest in a 780i board you could still get a 680i LT board for around 169usd to run two GT or GTS cards.
Occasionally Crossfire does scale better than SLi however SLi is properly supported in more titles.
Price vs performance I'm still a fan of the GT and GTS. Two of those would set you back around 400usd with rebate-

If you play 1920x or less, they're all you need and in many cases a single card will do.
anyone who has played games like CoD4 or Crysis under Vista is missing out. I ran CoD4 with the 8800gtx at 1600x1200 and my min FPS was about 55-58fps and max was about 75-80. Crysis stresses my PC on Very High (XP DX10 Feature hack) but i get an average of about 30-75fps depending on the situation.
