Hello guys,

I need some help here.

I want to upgrade my video card on my Compaq D510, which has pci and agp x4 slot. but its power supply has max 175 watts.

Is it possible at all to have nvidia 5500 or even 6200 card run without replacing the power supply, since I don't think I can get > 250 watt power supply for this specific old Compaq model?

Thanks in advance.
Rick

I think you're out of luck Rick, I didn't see any PSU requirements under 250W for these cards. :(

Hi Ric

Yes you need more power but I'm sure if you check around you can get a more powerful PSU for you Compaq. Google/eBay around for someone using your model PC in the last couple years and drop them a line. If you can't find any then you might consider asking Google to give you a newsgroup for "Legacy Compaq Models X, Y, Z".

Thanks for all the previous replies.

Here is update of my video card upgrade:

Finally I purchased a nvidia 5500 fx (3D fusion from BFG), and installed it on my system with 175W power supply. It runs fine so far. I ran glxgears and got 2000 fps (I am using Linux btw). Normal desktop graphic is a lot better now. I am really happy.

I will try to get xgl running next, and see how it goes.

X-fingers. :-)
