I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 (1.6gHz C/384mb/20gb) with the GF2go chip. My X setup was working well, albeit slowly (385fps glxgears 24bit/1024x768), untill I installed the new drivers.

Now, my laptop powers down (i.e. cannot be pinged from a neighbor on the network) when I start X. Unfortunately, no errors are returned in the XF86 log.

As I posted before I read the trouble reporting message (bad me!), I added all the XF86 logging and config info to the 4363 Release thread, and I won't waste space by repeating it here.

Thanks!

If you switch resolutions down, then up (ctrl-alt-keypadplus, ctrl-alt-keypadminus), does that turn the screen back on? This happens with a lot of Dell laptops; that's the fix currently. Though I thought 4363 was supposed to fix that... ah well...

I'll grab a 2650 and try to repro.

Unfortunately, when I say "powers down" I mean it. The machine stops responding completely. I have been using my backup laptop, ssh'ed in, to monitor the logs, and the connection dies the instant X is started.

Please let me know if there is anything else that is needed to troubleshoot this issue.

Also, it goes without saying that nVidia's support of the free software community is wthout equal. Thanks, guys!

The problem is reproducible on my Dell Inspiron 2650, GF2go chip.

Red Hat 9.0
Kernel 2.4.21-rc1

Also reproducable on Inspiron 2650, GeForce2 Go, RHL9 w/ all errata/updates installed.

There are also a few other problems I've had with previous builds concerning the 2650 and/or RHL9 (I just found this site), but I will address them in separate threads once I can install 4363 and see if they're still present.

Im haveing the same problem with my dell 2650. the xf86 log fill just stops the computer stops monitor off no keys work. I'm running redhat 8. so I guess its kinda a wide spread problem with the 2650. hopefully some one will figure out how to fix this soon.

I am experiencing the same problem with a dell inspiron 4100. However, I have some other symptoms to report:

I've also tried the 43.54 drivers with windows me and xp on this machine (using fiddled inf files which recognise the dell) and they are very unstable at 1024x768x32 which is also my default screen mode in X. OTOH, they work fine in 16bit colour. When I try to change the windows resolution in xp to 32 bit, the screen goes blank and freezes up in exactly the same way that X does when it starts up. I haven't had a chance to test X at 16 bit to see if it runs, but I suspect it will (unified drivers indeed!!)

I'm switching my windows drivers back to 41.09 which is OK in this respect.

Will report back after trying 16bit colour in X.

I have the exact same setup, although with new kernel 2.20-18, and the same problem. It doesn't power down (I have to hold the power button to kill it) but the LCD backlight dies. It seems that the log stops at a reasonably random place each time, so it shouldn't be a module loading or anything like that. I have installed the 4349 version (any before that wouldn't even compile), and it seems to work although the 3D accelerated dithering looks bad (kind of shadowy on one side), and switching back to a console VT the screen looks all screwy (seems like a refresh rate of 10 and sometimes random noisy vertical bars..)

At least for now the 4349 works for the most part starting X.

Previously tested versions before 4349 with a different kernel source compiled and ran perfectly.

Thanks for the great support.

I'm also one of those unfortunate DELL Inspiron 2650 users who's box crashes dismally right after the 4363 driver starts up. From this thread I see that the NVidia Linux driver team is informed of the problem. I was just wondering why it isn't reported as a known issue in the 4363 errata page.

Taking this opportunity I would also like to bring attention to an other known (found it in other threads) problem which prevents switching back to a text console after X starts up the first time. This has plagued the Inspiron 2650 since driver version 3123 (version 2960 was the last one known to work). I presume this is solved using

options nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0
options nvidia NVreg_Mobile=1

in /etc/modules.conf and

Option "IgnoreEDID" "true"

in /etc/X11/XF86Config; please correct me if I'm wrong.

So I guess we'll have to wait for yet another driver version... Any ideas when that might be?

NVidia XFree86 driver team, keep up the good work :)
