I am planning to upgrade my platform,(mobo, ram, cpu). I am nearly sure that I am getting an E8400, 4gb of ram(not sure on specifics), all I need is some help picking out a new board. I think am gonna get an x38 but know nothing about the current motherboard market, just want to stay away from nvidia...

Also is there a new board looming? When is skulltrail gonna be released...

X38's have two full speed PCI-E slots, whereas the P35 only has one. The X48 is a highly binned X38, so there's not much reason to get one, unless you just want bragging rights. So that's about it for Core 2 mobos, other then nvidia.

Skulltrail will only be sold through Intel, and is limited to 2000 boards as far as I know, with a price of $500 or more. It's socket 771 only, meaning either the new QX9775 or socket 771 Xeons. It doesn't take standard DDR2 or DDR3, it requires DDR2 FB-Dimms instead which means slower ram at a higher price.

Thanks, heard the name skull trail somewhere and though it was intels new chip to replace the p35/x38/x48...

So there is no new chipset launch looming around the corner, right?

It appears that x48's are ddr3 only, if so f-that...

No, there are DDR2 X48 boards, like the Gigabyte X48-DQ6.

For my money a nice featured P35 board is more than enough, just as the P965 was when I bought my board last year.

so is there any performance increase going from a p35 to a x38 to a x48?

Not from anything I've seen. It's probably only worth it if you want to run Crossfire, since as others have said even if P35 boards have another x16 length slot it is usually only x4 electrical.

ya x48 seems to bring 1600 support, and thats about it...

So it's between p35 and x38, I plan to stick with a single highend card. With gaming performance what is better? That is what it's is going to come down to..

I think that I am going to wait for the q9450, so the market might change by then...

P35 will provide identical gaming performance with a single card.
