thinking abouting buying a used HDTV...

I don't have a big budget like a lot of you guys do.. Only making 14 an hour right now... just started my union apprenticeship, but anyway. I'm going to have about 600 bucks to spend on a HDTV.

Looking on craigslist I see tons of guys selling DLP and CTR rear projection TVs for around that area and even some times a 32" LCD.

What do you guys think I should avoid and make sure I check out when I go look at these TVs?
I don't want to make a mistake...

I've purchased two things off craigslist and both had immediate issues. That place is shady, you'll probably get an STD just by picking up the TV.

No way would I buy electronics off Craiglist. At least check out EBay and look for Platinum or Titanium sellers that are often brick and mortar shops that are resellings refurbs or last years model. Often, you will get a manufacturers warranty and at least a limited time warranty from the dealer if the tv is DOA. On Craiglist, you would be lucky to even test the tv out. Don't do it. If you want a new set, check out Amazon.com or the like. Often, you can get an LCD or DLP on the cheap. It is amazing that sets that would have been worldclass just a year or so ago are now going for a little over a thousand bucks. Good luck.

Check this out, 720p with a built in DVD. Good television for the money. Don't waste your money or time on Craigslist.

Could just be the area, I've never bought anything from Craigs, but I do know a friend that got a sweet tv for a really good price. I think the owner was moving so they couldn't take it with them. If you can look at them before you get it I would have them get you the model # of the tv first, and then look online before you even go over there. Once you do then just make sure the # they gave you matches the actual tv.

Don't buy a CRT as a replacement (I assume you were typing that rather than CTR).
DLP and LCD is decent, but each can have it's share of potential issues.

I'd also expect that people are offloading their 720p or 1080i sets for 1080p sets, which may put some decent ones on the market. While there are benefits to having the latest and greatest, I'm on a 42" 1080i dlp, and just bought a 32" 720p lcd.
