Hey im getting a pair of these for a system and using stock cooling with them

How are the temps in the Gt 512 cards in SLi?

I know they run near 60c idle but whats the temps with these during gameplay in SLI?

Remove the HSFs if the temps are running hot and re-apply thermal paste. I've helped probably 12 people with this and it made a HUGE difference

Yea thats the impression im getting.

I got the BFG 8800GTX's and we had to apply new paste to them to get them down to 62c idle 75 max but GT's aren't as got as GTX's.

its for my brother so we need to keep them a decent temps cuz he has cats and he isn't very good at keeping his rig clean oh as of past experiences with the boxes i built for him.

I can settle for 60c themps 75c tops but anything higher than that, we need to go to the better coolers.

Ummm, they don't usually run 60 at idle, that's the 8800gtx.

My 8800gt is idling at 48*C (fan 100%) with the card overclocked a lot and I just got done playing UT3 about 2 minutes ago. :)

I heard that the GT's are damn good SLI cards paired.

I hear they compete welll with GTX's in SLI even scoring higher in 3dmark

personally I would get a pair of GTS 512's. The dual slot cooler on them is better than the GT and of course they run faster than the GTs. You can pick up an EVGA for $260 after $30 mail in rebate on Newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130325 The fastest, cheapest performance out right now for Cyrsis are a pair of 8800GTS 512's in SLI. Any game for that matter.

The 8800GTS 512 prices have fallen to where they are only $40-$60 higher than the 8800gt. Much better price/performance ratio with the gts imho.

Max fan speed when gaming i think..they do tend to go upto the 90's..

Yes Mr Bigman, GT's are superb in SLI. But you will want better coolers. 75*C+ is normal with stock cooler. Mine never pass 55*C with the Zalman's at the OC in sig. Also the stock coolers will piss you off with the noise, very loud at anything over 60% fan speed. Two of em is even worse. The Zalman's are very quiet indeed, and look sweet >>>

Im glad you appreciate my being pissed off cuz its healthy for this planet when im happy.

Yea my GTX's don't run all that hot either but he has them alrady.

I think he got the XFX Alphadog series with the Company of Heroes so i get a free copy too.

I've got 2 8800 GT's. Stock heatsink/fan @ 60%. Right now my idle is 44c.

Gaming, I've never gone past 60.

I ordered 2 EVGA 8800gt's as well as a 780i board that should be here in a day or so. Cant wait!! Here is a bios update to solve some of the overheating probs with evga cards:http://evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=176929

Something strange about the rig.

We had 4096 ram installed right, well XP sees 1225 of it which is expected.

We added the 2nd card to make SLI work and we have now 3072 ram.

For some reason adding the 2nd card took away 250mb of ram off the 4096 availble.

Thats strange.

I think the RAM limit for a 32-bit OS includes vram. ;)

I think it has to do with pci remapping features.

If the OS doesn't support a 4 gig ram setup, than remapping kicks in and allows pci pci-ex devices to buffer the availble ram.

If after market cooling solutions for those is the way someone is going to go the Zalmans are nice but I prefer one of these:

How complicated is it putting a custom fan on a video card? Is it easier/harder/the same as changing a CPU cooler?

The more hardware you add to a motherboard running a 32bit OS the less IRQ's (I think) are left for your RAM. Time for Vista 64 Mr. B :p
