I can't get KB938371 to install on a vista ultimate 32bit system. It keeps saying failed with an error code 80073712. Any ideas on how to remedy this.
I have disabled my antivirus/firewall to no avail.
I've rebooted and retried with the same error. I also downloaded the stand alone version of the update and it failed as well.
I just typed in the error code you posted and got this..
http://www.mcse.ms/message2552344.html
but this is one of many pages on this error.
(google) 80073712

I've seen that post but is old and the files that it refers to are older then the ones i have.
I've tried to install the update again after uninstalling my Norton360 just to see if that was the issue but it still didn't install.

Having failed 3 times to install KB938371 I succesfully did the
following
Go to 'Download details: Update for Windows Vista (KB938371)'
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=695d7c32-252c-40e8-a15d-81029bec7d76&displayLang=en
Download standalones KB937287-x86.msu and KB938371-x86.msu
Disable Anti-virus, Windows firewall and disconnect from internet
Install KB937287 (no reboot required) then KB938371 reboot and it
succesfully installs without multi bootups.
Both patches come in 32 and 64 bit versions
Thanks for your input buddy and welcome to the forum :)

Had you already installed KB937287? And you reinstalled it with this method?
I just tried this ( i already had installed KB937287 successfully), but it said that KB937287 was not needed and still failed to install KB938371.
yea 938371 is giving me crap too, it's installed 2 times already and says it was successful but keeps trying to get me to download and install it again. i just clicked "ignore this update".

No! I had not installed KB937287 prior. If you have it already installed in your list it should then install KB938371. Make sure you have disabled the ant-virus, windows firewall, and are disconnected from internet. Even try disabling UAC. Other readers that have tried this with success, but maybe you have other cliches on your machine.

I still can't get KB938371 installed, and now SP1 is available i really need to install this patch. Has anyone with the same problem found a solution?
Things i have tried:
1. Manually install it: fails
2. turn off all antivirus, uac, firewalls, manually install it: fails
3. use old restore point: none old enough to use
4. run the system file checker: no difference
5. manually install in safe mode: won't allow

Does it fail after reboot ? are you useing Comodo Firewall ?
I had similar problem i did the following.
If you have Comodo make sure its updated to latest version .
If not you can try this , type msconfig (thro Run) and select Boot / Safe Boot,
Now try installing update and once it reboots it should load into safemode and finish updates , then from safe mode uncheck boot option , and restart back to normal windows. ( note start install from normal mode not from safe mode)
This worked for one patch i had trouble , your case might be different.
