View Full Version : Bluray will not win the war.
SONY DOES NOT OWN THE RIGHTS TO BLU-RAY. THEY HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE FORMAT. THEY ARE ONLY THE MOST VOCAL MEMBER OF THE BLU-RAY DISC ASSOCIATION.
no, but Sony gets royalties on every BD sold.

So does every other member of the BDA. What's your point?

they are part of the group that determines royalties, so they have a say in the price point, unlike DVD.

Oh noes! Guess what? They were part of the group that developed CD's and DVD's. Quick everyone destroy your DVDs!
They developed CDs with Philips and for DVDs they and Philips dropped their developing format to join Toshiba and the rest; in turn improving Toshibas design aswell.
HD-DVD might be dead, but blu-ray will isn't going to win.
I will not pay $400 for a blu-ray player. EVER. I will not pay $30 per movie for a blu-ray movie. EVER. I have a feeling a lot of people feel this way.
I will stick with SD-DVD until it dies.

You poor thing...
This is the reason why I never bought a high-end HD-DVD or Blu-ray player - I was sticking with my Xbox 360 and PS3 until someone finally won the format war.

actually currently ps3 is best blu-ray player in the market and is upgradable to profile 2.0 so basically you already have one. ;)

You buy movies? Why? I rent them on Netflix. I refuse to pay $10 for a movie.

And with the new online viewing of Netflix titles, there's hardly any reason for me to even rent DVDs anymore. I will be renting blu-ray though!

Tokyo—Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders.
Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.

I dont see how this is any different to the change from VHS-DVD, hardware and software prices eventually fall...
There is actually a big difference. DVDs offered many advances over VHS. People wanted the ability to skip chapters, not having to worry about rewinding at the end of the movie, widescreen support, higher resolutions, perfect picture pausing, all the extra stuff added, ect..
The only real advantage of the HD formats is the higher resolutions. The rest is just fluff.
